Names I love but can't use

Today looking for baby girl name inspiration I fell down a YouTube black hole of videos titled 'names I love but can't use'. There were various reasons including dh didn't like it, too popular, not having anymore kids etc

I'm struggling to come up with any girls names I love at the moment but wondered if anyone wanted to share their top 5 names they love but can't use and the reason? Would be good to hear a Mumsnet version of what I watched today as the videos were good but mostly American. Names like 'Fair' were cropping up and a bit too 'out there' for boring me!

Thanks to anyone willing to share Smile

Even though I'm hoping for girls name suggestions I'll get the ball rolling with my boys names suggestions.

Love these boys names but can't use any of them for all the same reasons 1) I'm pregnant with a girl 2) this is 2nd and last baby!!

Fletcher
Fraser
Alexander
Christopher
Nolan (I suspect my dh would have vetoed this one too so another reason it couldn't be used!)

I wouldn't use the following;

Leoni, Layla, Carys, Milly

Because there are too many other ways of pronouncing or spelling.

Karen, Stella, Lucy, Georgia, Margot

Because they are already in the family or a bit dated.

I love Olawumi but I don't think it'll work, culture-wise.

Rockaby · 27/04/2017 20:39

I can't use, but love:

Eleanor
Alexandra
Elspeth
Charlotte
Elizabeth

All of these^^ are because we have one in the extended family.

Boys -
Hamish
Isaiah
Innes
Benedict
Josiah

All of these^^ are because DH vetoed.

I liked Avery but then I saw a street sign in a not so nice area for exactly what the baby would be called if we went with Avery (so imagine our name is Grove, it was Avery Grove) I probably wouldn't have anyway but that ruled it out completely.

Dexter - ex boyfriend of a close relative

Reuben - was my favourite name but now it's my toddler's best friend, we are good friends with the parents, would be more than just a bit weird to use that name now.

James - DH just doesn't like it

KarineAimee · 27/04/2017 22:20

Audrey, Stella, Frida - DH didn't like them
Scarlett, Rowan - sound ridiculous with our surname

Vanillaradio · 27/04/2017 22:49

Boys names vetoed by dh
Adam
Miles
Sebastian
Seth
(they all sound like they're in an upper class Indie band together apparently!)
And one used by too many of our friends
Jacob.
Girls names
Olivia (because our town is swarming with them, met at least one in every baby and toddler group)
Carrie (dh veto)
Grace (will be the middle name if we ever have a dd but feel like it's too much pressure for a first name, what if she was clumsy.....)
Libby (dh veto )
Ivy (mils first name but she hated it so dh would feel odd using it)

QuietNameChange · 27/04/2017 22:55

Severin (DH vetoed it...)

OutsSelf · 27/04/2017 23:03

For DD Robyn, because I have a Reuben. And Stevie, because I am an Evie

For DS, Rowan or Robin, because I have a Reuben

For either Ashley because DP vetoed

Lemondrop09 · 27/04/2017 23:09

Both me and DH love Aubrey for a boy - and we're having a boy! But don't feel able to use it since America turned it into a girls name Sad

Sophronia · 27/04/2017 23:13

Susanna(h)
Martha
Louisa
Esther
Rowan

Alec

Catherinebee85 · 27/04/2017 23:23

Grace - my 6 week old niece's middle name

Impresionante · 27/04/2017 23:25

2 of my dc names already listed!

Indigo - too way out/try hard but I love it

Hugh - combined with surname becomes comedic

Talitha - vetoed by dh

Amaryllis - nn Ryl - loved it from a story in Misty comic when I was 6, but too much in real life

Xanthippe - love it but too out there (was in one of those R4 comedies that I never quite take in properly but laugh at anyway)

GreatFuckability · 28/04/2017 00:07

Gwennie- doesn't work with surname
Medi- ex vetoed
Asa- i wanted welsh names, and its not.
Llian, Llew, Llyr- the exs family would have lost their minds with the LL Grin

Buntysoven · 28/04/2017 00:23

Alice- because of that bloody song.
Cherry- because too many people said it eas a stripper name
Lois- dh said superman and family guy put him off
Demelza- damn TV for bringing Poldark back
Arietty- didnt dare.

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 28/04/2017 00:53

As a middle name for DS-

Severus- Harper Seven was born three months before, so I was worried it would sound too "samey"
Albus- DH vetoed
Andante- see above
Forte- see above.

SuperBeagle · 28/04/2017 01:37

Names I love but won't be using:

  1. Chloe - my favourite name of all time, but it has been in the top 5 in my state (Australia) for 10+ years and that bothers me too much to use it. I believe it was no. 4 in 2016. I don't know any baby Chloes but there must be loads out there.
  1. Scarlett - I have a little relative named Charlotte and the two names are just too similar.
  1. Madeleine - Love this but hate the inevitable nickname "Maddie", which seems so contrasting with a beautiful name like Madeleine.
  1. Sarah - Can't use this one because my surname is Lee and my child isn't a frozen dessert.
  1. Ivy - Again, can't be used with my surname or it sounds like "Ivy League".
Thewolfsjustapuppy · 28/04/2017 09:56

Names I like got vetoed by DH for being too posh. I am a southerner and he is from the north so there was a bit of a clash when it came to name tastes. I like:
Juno
Desdamona
Fenella
Finoula
Otilie
Marielle
yes I am a Jill cooper fan and I would have sorted out the spellings before actually naming my baby
Jocelyn
Dorian
Sebastian
Urskin
Ruskin
Finbar

The one we settle on made it to the top one hundred that year which surprised me as I'd never met anyone by that name.

GraceBlish · 28/04/2017 10:12

Thea
Isla
Freya
Leila

Love all these but have friends with children with these names

Murine · 28/04/2017 10:19

Naomi, Zoe, Verity, Harriet: DH didn't like them as they're either too posh, an ex's name or he knows one at work who is horrible.
Saul: my family calls relatives "our xxxxx" and that wouldn't have sounded great Grin

Nonibaloni · 28/04/2017 10:20

thewolf that's basically my list. Finoula nn nou would be my son if he was a girl. The rest were definitely contenders.

Now I can say with absolute truth I've heard of other people choose these names for any future children, thus negating the too unusual argument.

MrPoppersPenguins · 28/04/2017 10:22

Few names that sound similar to my own (think Steve and Niamh), husband said it would sound daft.

My dads name I love but it's also my FIL name (we don't speak to him)

Monty.... oh hated 😕
