Names I love but can't use

Today looking for baby girl name inspiration I fell down a YouTube black hole of videos titled 'names I love but can't use'. There were various reasons including dh didn't like it, too popular, not having anymore kids etc

I'm struggling to come up with any girls names I love at the moment but wondered if anyone wanted to share their top 5 names they love but can't use and the reason? Would be good to hear a Mumsnet version of what I watched today as the videos were good but mostly American. Names like 'Fair' were cropping up and a bit too 'out there' for boring me!

Thanks to anyone willing to share Smile

Even though I'm hoping for girls name suggestions I'll get the ball rolling with my boys names suggestions.

Love these boys names but can't use any of them for all the same reasons 1) I'm pregnant with a girl 2) this is 2nd and last baby!!

Fletcher
Fraser
Alexander
Christopher
Nolan (I suspect my dh would have vetoed this one too so another reason it couldn't be used!)

Dexter
Darcy
Cassidy
Layla
Phoenix

All a 'no' from DH....although his list was more 'out there' 😂

catsarenice · 28/04/2017 10:33

Maddie
Marnie
Christie
Kristen
Georgie
And my absolute favourite: Stevie

Wreckingball25 · 28/04/2017 10:40

Jessica, a friend called her baby it the year before
Poppy, vetoed by OH in my last month of pregnancy! Angry he's a teacher and vetoed lots of names based on girls he's taught but Poppy was because it didn't have a formal/Sunday best variation that could have Poppy as a nickname and the formal name for CV etc
Lucy, doesn't go with surname

MagnumAddict · 28/04/2017 14:58

'Our Saul' is the best reason yet to not use a name! Grin

Meredith & Beatrix. Love both but already used by extended family/friends.

MarcelineQueen · 28/04/2017 20:08

I ADORE the name Stevie and DP wouldn't let me 😭

Maybe if we get DD2...

I liked Eugenie but dh said it sounded like eugenics.

he's a farmer with a West Country accent so Ottilie went out the window too. I suggested it and he said, "ooh, I think Otterly is loverly!"

BendydickCuminsnatch · 28/04/2017 20:20

Obsessed with these videos too Grin

Malin - I'm not scandi and think it might be weird? Would be pleased to be told otherwise
Hazel - surname
Actually, any H name

Israel - too religious/culturally doesn't work
Nicholas - family
Matthew - family

There are tons more but I can't think of em.

Thewolfsjustapuppy · 29/04/2017 07:22

Noni you clearly have excellent taste Grin others on my list included Finnavear (feminine form of Finbar) and Jago (in fact if, in an alternative universe, I ever had another boy I would call him Jago and DH would just have to lump it)

NotAMammy · 30/04/2017 21:11

Niamh, Evelyn, Rachel, Madeline, Amy, Lorna, Grace, Charlotte, Isobelle, Aoibheann,

All either nieces or vetod by DH, or in the case of Grace, our last name starts with an 'S' and I don't think it would sound right. I'm kind of thinking that I might just tell people that future DD is called one of the veto'd names before he gets a chance to say anything and then he can't change it....

Nonibaloni · 30/04/2017 21:23

I'm sorry for your DH because i am having future children with you! Or at least taking all these names. Jago is beautiful and goes with my sons name and Finnavear and Finoula would be perfect for twins. What do you think about Fingle?

NataliaOsipova · 30/04/2017 21:29

I loved:
Madeleine (put off by McCann)
Scarlett (DH hated and it's a bit "popular")
Charlotte (one in my family)
Anna (one in DH's family)
Beatrice (not good with our surname)

BeeThirtythree · 01/05/2017 04:06

Murine I am Northern and add prefix 'our' to names...even to the kindly non Northern librarian called Saul 😳 I was mortified and realised for the same reason as yourself why I could never name my child Saul either...it's a lovely name too

lizzieoak · 01/05/2017 05:10

Exh vetoed a bunch of names for class-based reasons (that as a Canadian were a bit over my head - we can be snobby about entirely different names). He banned;
Sebastian
Toby
Odile - all too posh

Pearl
Maisie - too working class

I was the first of my friends to have kids (in my 30's) so didn't have to worry about over-used names. I did check local govt name lists to make sure we weren't choosing something that was a 1 in 4 is named X kind of name.

Murine · 01/05/2017 07:41

GrinBeeThirtythree yes its such a shame! It's only really my sisters that I still use it for nowadays, I must sort that out.....my children are missing out!

stuckinthehouse · 01/05/2017 07:56

Evelyn (Niece's name)
Chloe (too similar to DD)
Mary (dd's middle name)
Heidi (sounds comical with surname)
India (would seem odd due to zero connection with the country)

Solomon (rhymes with surname)
Henry (nephew's name)
Isaac (close friend)
Leo (rhymes with sibling)
Arthur (sounds comical with surname)
Titus (can't see past tight-arse)

Thewolfsjustapuppy · 01/05/2017 08:24

Fingle is lovely (except my phone, who always knows better than me, changed it to Dongle Hmm) what about Fintan?

Nonibaloni · 01/05/2017 12:50

Fintan is nice, I think I maybe like the F sounds, which is slightly embarrassing because my name starts with F Blush.

I'll spend the bank holiday naming my imaginary children starting with other letters.

MiriAmmerman · 01/05/2017 13:24

DP and I are currently ttc DC1; as we're about to start our 7th cycle of fertility treatment, we've had plenty of time to consider names (we do it to cheer ourselves up Grin).

I can't use:

  • Alice (close friend has used it)
  • Constance (friend has used it)
  • Martha (friend has used, and a bit dodgy with surname)
  • Rosie (doesn't go with surname at all)
  • Alexandra (name of one of my best friends)
  • Sophie (too popular, and we know several of all ages)

And the boys:

  • Gabriel (we both love it, but FIL sniggers and says "Gayboy" every time we mention it Angry Don't want future DS bullied by his own grandfather. Particularly insensitive as DP and I are a lesbian couple Confused)
  • Reuben (DP not keen, and doesn't go with surname)
  • Henry (my godson is called this)
  • Edward (doesn't go with surname)
  • Jack (I have always liked this; DP would never consent to it due to popularity)
  • John (name of estranged relative so would be super-awkward to explain to family)

That's more than 5 for each - sorry! There are so many reasons not to use otherwise perfectly lovely names.

MiriAmmerman · 01/05/2017 13:25

Sorry about the bold - tried to do bullet points and it went wrong Blush

Jooni · 01/05/2017 13:44

Iona - doesn't work with "nouny" surname
Hero - too matchy with DD's name
Saskia - cousin's name
Esther - too close to SIL's name
Pippa - dodgy meaning in loads of languages
Liv - put off by popularity of Olivia and Liv/Livi as a nickname
Meg - vetoed by DH because of Family Guy

Jago - too close to DD's name
Felix - cousin's child
Maxim - too close to DH's name
Ivo/Ivor - ditto Iona
Rex - ditto Maxim (I think this could be OK, he doesn't)
Asa - vetoed by DH because of porn star Confused
Louis - love but too popular/know too many
