DH and I have really struggled with boys shortlist. I'm now a week overdue and have too much thinking time!

We don't 'love' any boys name as much as our girls shortlist.

However, my favourite is Fraser
DHs favourite is Alexander

I do like Alexander as well. The full name is lovely but very long for a little person. I know there are lots of nns but the only one I really like is Sandy. Realistically outside of family I imagine they could easily be an Alex which I'm a bit meh about.

My question is how the name Fraser is perceived. I went to school (in Scotland) with a few Frasers so to me it's quite a normal name. We live in England now though and I wonder how it comes across as a name? Does it sound to you like a made-up type name?

I like it. I've heard of one I think, aged about 5.

I have one, he is 11. The only other one I know outside Scotland is about 30, so I think it's still fairly unusual.

I like both names.

A friend comes from a family with generations of Alexanders and the each have different nicknames.

It's my surname, but I went to school in Scotland with several Frasers (first name).

Be prepared for every spelling variation - Fraiser, Frazer, Fraizer, Frasor, Fraisor, Fraisir etc. Took me three years to get the bank to comply!

Is Sandy a common nn for Alexander outside of Scotland? I think you would be more likely to have people call him Alex if you went with Alexander.

Fraser is a good name, I'd go for it.

Even in Scotland I think of Sandy as an older man's name.

The only Alexander I know at my kids' school gets Alexander in full, no short versions.

I like both, but agree that Alexander is likely to end up as Alex so if you don't want that I'd avoid.

I think Fraser is a good, solid, cool, not overused name. I've only ever met two little ones, one spelt Frazer (but I prefer it your way).

I take your point about Sandy not being an overly common nn for Alexander outside of Scotland. It's probably not. To be fair I do like Alexander as a full name a lot, but at least when they are a baby I can't imagine calling them by the full name!

Fraser is a lovely, strong name, I really like it.
I much prefer it to Alexander, but do think Sandy is a nice nick name.
I'd definitely go with Fraser.

I like the name Fraser. I knew a lovely English Fraser who was born in the mid-80's. He's the only one I've ever met.

I have a Frazer and we live in England (although DH is Scottish ). He is the only one in his school, but it's not too unusual.

The only problems we have is people spelling it wrong and pronouncing it like the TV series Fraiser.

I went to school with a Fraser. It's a good name, recognisable too. Alexander is also a great name but more popular - I heard Sacha as a diminutive the other day which I quite liked.

Obviously Fraser is traditionally a Scottish surname which has become popular as a first name. It has been used as a first name for a long time now though, which to me sets it apart from other more recent 'surnames as first names' .... am I right or is that wishful thinking?

DH is a Fraser he suits it! I think it's a lovely name, it got shortened to 'Fraz' in his teenage years and it often get mispronounced as 'Fray-sher'

I know an adult Frazer. He gets fed up with everyone spelling it Fraser (so that wouldn't be a problem for you) but the other thing is the number of people who spell and pronounce it Frasier as a PP has mentioned. He really hates that.

Mind you, if you are naming a child now, by the time he is an adult that might be less of an issue as Frasier may not be so well known any more.

We liked Alexander but not Alex which I knew he would immediately have it shortened to. I like Fraser, I have a name they I often have to spell and it doesn't bother me. I tend to say my name and then immediately spell it. It's no big deal to say Fraser and that's f r a s e r.

I have a nearly 9yo Fraser too! He gets really annoyed with misspellings (Frazer and Frasier) but his friends call him Fray and Fras which he likes

PP saying it's a good solid name reminds me of an elderly lady who stopped for a look when he was a baby. She described it as a 'manly' name.
