Fraser

DH and I have really struggled with boys shortlist. I'm now a week overdue and have too much thinking time!

We don't 'love' any boys name as much as our girls shortlist.

However, my favourite is Fraser
DHs favourite is Alexander

I do like Alexander as well. The full name is lovely but very long for a little person. I know there are lots of nns but the only one I really like is Sandy. Realistically outside of family I imagine they could easily be an Alex which I'm a bit meh about.

My question is how the name Fraser is perceived. I went to school (in Scotland) with a few Frasers so to me it's quite a normal name. We live in England now though and I wonder how it comes across as a name? Does it sound to you like a made-up type name?

Fraser definitely does not sound made up in England Grin. It's a pretty well known name.

To me, if I was asked to immediately judge, I'd think very middle class or very Scottish.

Nice enough name though.

I also agree with you about Alexander. I love the full name, but am not a big fan of the inevitable Alex.

Fraser is a great name! People will mispronounce it as Frasier, though. I used to work a Saturday job at House of Fraser and at least half the staff there said 'House of Frasier' instead. Aargg!

If we had a boy Alexander was top of our list but as Scots - Alec would have been our go to NN.

Love it! If I ever had a son this is the name I'd use

Thanks so much for all your comments, has definitely cemented Fraser as a very strong contender for me! If baby is indeed a boy (i'm convinced but don't know why)

PP saying it's a good solid name reminds me of an elderly lady who stopped for a look when he was a baby. She described it as a 'manly' name. ha, love this! They are both nice strong names, I think.

We have always called him Ander for a nn. hadn't heard of that one as a nn, I like it!

I do really like the name Alexander too, just that there do seem to be quite a few popping up around here recently so think Fraser is nice as a bit more unusual. May just take a bit of convincing on DH front though. If baby ever actually arrives.... maybe I'll just be pregnant forever!! Hmm

Fraser is a fantastic name. It's our ds's middle name. I like Alexander but much prefer Fraser. It's strong and classic (and in no way made-up sounding).

I like Fraser.

Alexand is so common (=popular)...

Work with a Fraser and he's the first person I've met with that name. Mid 20's, lovely guy.

I'm an Alexandra and my BIL is Alexander which I thought might be awkward having two Alex's around but he's known as Xand or Xander and always has been. Prefer Xand to Alex tbh.

I really like Fraser. There are so many Alexanders around - I find it quite boring.

DS went to primary with 2 FRASERS one was Frazer the other was Fraser.
DS is Alexander. Grin
It was the only boys name we could agree on and it wasn't until he turned 2 that I thought it suited him.
He gets called Alex by his friends only because he got fed up of older people mispronouncing at as Alexandra. So started asking people to just call him Alex.
We have always called him Ander for a nn.
They are both very strong names.
Alexander means 'defender of men'

We call ours Fray, he never shortens it though.

I love Fraser.

Not generally keen on surnames as first names but for some reason I like the Scottish ones - maybe because they've been used as first names for a long time?

Love Alexander too though.

I have a nearly 9yo Fraser too! He gets really annoyed with misspellings (Frazer and Frasier) but his friends call him Fray and Fras which he likes Confused Hmm

It's definitely not part of the surnames as first names trend. (Which I quite like)
It's a first name 'first' to me. :)

We liked Alexander but not Alex which I knew he would immediately have it shortened to. I like Fraser, I have a name they I often have to spell and it doesn't bother me. I tend to say my name and then immediately spell it. It's no big deal to say Fraser and that's f r a s e r.

I know an adult Frazer. He gets fed up with everyone spelling it Fraser (so that wouldn't be a problem for you) but the other thing is the number of people who spell and pronounce it Frasier as a PP has mentioned. He really hates that.

Mind you, if you are naming a child now, by the time he is an adult that might be less of an issue as Frasier may not be so well known any more.

DH is a Fraser Grin he suits it! I think it's a lovely name, it got shortened to 'Fraz' in his teenage years and it often get mispronounced as 'Fray-sher'

The only problems we have is people spelling it wrong and pronouncing it like the TV series Fraiser yeah that would really put me off! The TV series bit at least, I'm already used to people spelling my name wrong anyway!

I heard Sacha as a diminutive the other day which I quite liked I also like Sacha but not sure if this would come across a bit poncey?!! Maybe as a little pet name for me only heheh

Obviously Fraser is traditionally a Scottish surname which has become popular as a first name. It has been used as a first name for a long time now though, which to me sets it apart from other more recent 'surnames as first names' .... am I right or is that wishful thinking?

I went to school with a Fraser. It's a good name, recognisable too. Alexander is also a great name but more popular - I heard Sacha as a diminutive the other day which I quite liked.

I have a Frazer and we live in England (although DH is Scottish ). He is the only one in his school, but it's not too unusual.

I like the name Fraser. I knew a lovely English Fraser who was born in the mid-80's. He's the only one I've ever met.
