Maxim = lads' mag?

Considering Maxim as a middle name; I think it's fab plus it's a nice nod to DH, who is Maximilian. But we're concerned about the connection to the lads' mag of the same name. Is it a dealbreaker, even for a middle?

Also thinking about Magnus as it has the same meaning/origin. Which do you prefer?

Maxim to me means a well-known phrase, not the magazine that I didn't know was still in existence.

Why not Maximilian if it's more or less the name you like and it has a family link?

BelafonteRavenclaw · 10/04/2017 18:17

I wouldn't have thought of the connection initially. I know a Macsen, the Welsh version of Maximus.

Mungobungo · 10/04/2017 18:18

I Wouldn't think of the lads' mag, but as a name, to me, it feels unfinished. Personally I'd go for Max or Maximilian.

Queensparkles · 10/04/2017 18:51

Prefer Maximilian

Jooni · 10/04/2017 18:54

I do love Maximilian but it's a real mouthful together with the first name and surname.

I love Maximillian....but perhaps you could consider the alternative spelling that I saw at the weekend.....I kid you not.....Macksymilion. 😮

IvankaTrudeau · 10/04/2017 18:58

I really like Maxim. I'd probably more likely think of Russian connotations than the magazine.

TwentyCups · 10/04/2017 19:00

I like it. Wouldn't have thought about the lads mag - and babies born today will never have heard of it anyway.

I also like maximus. Also Mack!

ChippieFishieHorshie · 10/04/2017 19:01

I love the name Maxime (but for a girl). Magnus is currently one of the names on our boy's names list... But I also love Maximilian (even more than Magnus, tbh...)

TheBookIsOnTheTable · 10/04/2017 19:02

Very much the "lads mag" to me.

SumAndSubstance · 10/04/2017 19:03

Nah, I'd completely forgotten about the lads' mag. Does it still exist?

Finola1step · 10/04/2017 19:15

Ds has a friend called Maxim, who has of course shortened it to Max. Lovely name.

Jooni · 10/04/2017 19:16

I don't actually know if it still exists but interested to see if that's people's first association. I'm quite encouraged by the responses so far Smile

Maxim is class !

YoungYolandaYorgensen39 · 10/04/2017 19:24

I wouldn't have thought lads' magazine, I'd have thought Maxim Gorky. Not sure what that says about me.

Good name.

reuset · 10/04/2017 19:34

No idea about lads' mag. I think of Maxim Vengerov the violinist, I can't think of another reference.

IvankaTrudeau · 10/04/2017 20:02

If it isn't defunct now, it may well be within a few years.

Oysterbabe · 10/04/2017 20:59

Maksymilian is the Polish spelling.

I come across the word maxim at work. I'm a lawyer.

Maxim
[mak-sim]
noun
-an expression of a general truth or principle, especially an aphoristic or sententious one
-a principle or rule of conduct.

OnlyTheDepthVaries · 11/04/2017 16:31

Oyster - I didn't realise it was Polish...I feel like a right cow now! Apologies all.

LockedOutOfMN · 11/04/2017 16:36

When I hear Maxim I think Vengerov (don't know spelling, but phonetically it's like Vengerov). Amazing violinist whose recordings I love listening to. I prefer it to Maximilian or Magnus.

LockedOutOfMN · 11/04/2017 16:37

I think it's a lovely name.

MiniMaxi · 11/04/2017 21:05

I like Maxim. But if you're not sure, how about just Max as the middle name?

HonorBright · 12/04/2017 12:16

Doesn't matter in the slightest for a middle name.

MitzyLeFrouf · 12/04/2017 12:27

I agree that as it's just a middle name it really doesn't matter. When was the last time anyone had a conversation about their middle name?

MitzyLeFrouf · 12/04/2017 12:27

It reminds me of Maxim de Winter anyway.
