Inspiring people from history for DS's name?

It's a sort of family tradition to have a middle name chosen after an inspiring person from history (recent or ancient). Baby DS has had a bit of a rocky start so we want to give him a middle name that conjures up triumph over adversity.

The family precedent is to have names of adventurers and explorers but I'm open to other suggestions.

All inspiration gratefully received!

Ernest (Shackleton)
William (Bligh)
Neil (Armstrong)

My favourites are Charles (Darwin) and Isaac (Newton), DP quite likes Nikola (Tesla).
Google is pretty good though for finding lists, and it depends if you want a name that is obvious (Winston), one that some might link depending on where you live (Nelson or Martin) or less obvious ones (1 of the many Williams).
Or of course James (Cook) or Alexander (Mackenzie) if you want to stay with the explorers... loads of them too, including some less common names (IMO), like Ranulph (Sir, Fiennes).

Winston?

Darius (the Great, Persian King)
Alfred ( the Great, King of Wessex)
Olaudah (Equiano 1749-1797, freed slave and author)
Jefferson (as in Thomas of that ilk, American politician and abolitionist)
Jesse (Owens, gold medalist 1936 at Berlin Olympics)
Leif (Eriksson, norseman who reached America in C10th)
Edmund( Hillary, of Mt. Everest fame)

Can you narrow it down by looking at people with the same birthday as DS.

user1491148352 · 10/04/2017 10:59

Nelson - either Admiral Lord, or Mandela.

Mrsknackered · 10/04/2017 11:13

Ernest is a good one!
Would you use a surname? I think Attenborough/Armstrong/Drake could be kind of cool.
Congratulations Flowers

Bubbinsmakesthree · 10/04/2017 11:30

Thanks for the suggestions - i think all the names we have used in the family so far have been mentioned!

I was thinking of Ranulph as I have heard him speak and his stories of battling through arduous conditions are quite fitting.
