They need to sound good in English and German. And shouldn't cause any major issues for Italian and French speaking people...

I like:

Anton
Peregrine (too Lord of the Rings?)
Vincent
Emmett
Elric
Julius
Clint (I really like Clinton. But currently...?)
Cedric

Eric is lovely (Stoltz, Idle, the Half a Bee).

On another name thread Ichabod (it IS a real name!) is getting bandied about - and you know what? I find it fabulous Grin wish we had called DS Ichabod - little Bodie!

TyrionLannistersShadow · 16/03/2017 08:23

To whoever said Cillian is pronounced Sillion, that's completely wrong Grin. It's most definitely Kill-ee-an, it's a well known Irish name.

Nancy91 · 16/03/2017 08:24

Peregrine! Could be Perry for short.

1horatio · 16/03/2017 08:29

Einid

We used to have Ludovico on the list... It's the LO's great-gtreat grandfather :)

Owl Cillian is actually the name of an Irish saint who travelled to Germany in 686 as a missionary.

Oh wow, I didn't know that. Thanks :)

gemma That's basically my grandfather's name. Our relationship is a bit... non-existant, tbh...

sn1ce I quite like Marius, thanks :)!

attila

Nils is really really great :)!! I love that name. It also reminds me of one of my favourite books when I was little...

Ok... Maybe a weird question.

But let's say there was this (now dead) dude in your family. And he had been a really really horrible bastard.

So, not to dredge up old, painful memories (and because pregnancy actually makes you a little bit supseritious, for weird, even to you absolutely unknown reasons) you decide that his name/similar ones just can't be used.

So, no Klaus, Nicholas, Niccola etc...

But then comes Nils. And you really really like it. But you just feel that it may be kind of bad luck. Uhm... yeah.

Eric is lovely (Stoltz, Idle, the Half a Bee).

Eric is nice. But I think I may actually prefer Elric? A name I actually found because of the Ichabod/Icky thread :)!

On another name thread Ichabod (it IS a real name!) is getting bandied about - and you know what? I find it fabulous grin wish we had called DS Ichabod - little Bodie!

nancy

Is it too fashionable in the UK? Or too Lord of the RIngs? But yes. I think Peregrine nn Perry (or Perino or Idk.. Periniello...?) is really fabulous. :)!

OP posts:
soundsystem · 16/03/2017 08:36

I love Peregrine! It was on my list but DH vetoed it. The rest of our list:

Ivo
Otto
Ludovic (Ludo for short)
Kasimir
Caspar

Christian is too religious. Sorry.

Sunshine

That's really close to my own name...

Sadik · 16/03/2017 08:40

Alaric is fabulous. Agree Erik is also a really good name.

Finns two a penny round here, ditto Oscar.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 16/03/2017 09:26

Lars.

attilathehamster · 16/03/2017 10:02

Oh dear, ambivalent Nils vibes ... and there's me thinking I'd cracked it! Wink

1horatio · 16/03/2017 10:15

attila

Well, you kind of did. You couldn't know about that kind of nasty piece of family history, could you...? But I do really really like that name :)!! And if there wasn't the whole Klaus/Nicholas/etc issue that would probably be the name if DC2 turns out to be a boy.

sugar

Hmm. cute name, Very very ice-bear. But I don't love it, tbh. Sorry.

Sadik

I agree. Just googled the popularity of Finn and Oscar. Both are lovely names, but too popular

Alaric is nice... Erik is really cool. But I do think Elric is nicer... Or would we be dooming the LO to constantly spell his name? "No, not Erik. Elric. Nooo. E-L-R-I-C. ELRIC!"

OP posts:
attilathehamster · 16/03/2017 10:43

From your original list I really like Anton and Julius (also Anton was DH's grandfather's name).

Vincent is cute too. I really can't get into Eric, Alaric etc. though and Emmett is definitely Midwest redneck.

I love Felix, but if I had a penny for every one round here I'd be able to retire tomorrow!

Sadik · 16/03/2017 15:55

I wouldn't have thought Elric would be that tricky in the UK at least. Yes, he might have to say 'not erik' - but how many names have no options on spelling. And I reckon it's a name people would remember.

Just to throw something else into the mix, I used to know a Dax which is simple but unusual.

Gummibears · 16/03/2017 16:19

Dax is the Deutscher Aktienindex, the German equivalent of the FTSE Grin!

Sadik · 16/03/2017 16:29

Clearly setting him up early for a career in finance . . . Grin

diddl · 16/03/2017 16:38

We're in Germany & my daughter currently has a lovely, lovely boyfriend called Nils.

SenseiWoo · 16/03/2017 17:02

Arne
Owen
Gerard
Lorcan
Gavin
Gareth
Stefan (or is that dated now?)
Roman
Lewis
Urban (I love this name, but you'd have to be fairly brave)
Cormac
Quinlan
Rory
Rollo

1horatio · 16/03/2017 17:29

Emmett is definitely Midwest redneck.
That's so weird, seeing as neither DH nor I are in any way America. Although the baby's godfather will be my cousin who is actually originally from North Carolina. Which...well, still not the Midwest. Is Midwestern redneck all that bad...? Would somebody not American have this association?

Well, no. Not Dax GrinIt also sounds like Dachs. Which... I think that's a badger. And, although I openly admit that this is super horrible... Makes me think of shaving brushes.... :( Shock

diddl Yes, Nils is lovely. But seeing as it's a form of Nicholas/Niccola... I just can't. Maybe weird, but it would feel like incredibly bad luck.

I really really like Cormac . Using an Irish name when DH is English and I'm... a European-ish mix isn't weird, is it?

1horatio · 16/03/2017 17:35

Current list is:

  1. Emmett
  2. Elric
  3. Cormac
  4. Anton
  5. Julius
  6. Peregrine
  7. Sebastian

I scratched Clinton (love that name so much. Why must there be these political conotations...?), Vincent and Cedric off the list.

Clint (I really like Clinton. But currently...?)
Cedric

There is no such thing as "too lord of the rings" Wink but anyone who isn't a lotr fan probably wouldn't recognise it anyway.

I have met a couple of Perrys but I don't know if it was short for anything. Peregrine is unique but not in a silly made up way. It's lovely Smile

Pencilvester · 16/03/2017 18:56

Julius! I love Julius so much.
