If you heard the following names but didn't see the child/know any other details, would you assume they were boys or girls? You haven't seen the names written down so spellings make no difference.

Frankie
Ronnie
Charlie
Sidney/Sydney
Morgan
Riley
Jordan
Ashley
Aubrey
Addison
Emerson
Mackenzie
Phoenix
Brodie
Brogan

All of those names shout "BOY" to me, except Morgan , Ashley and Phoenix, which I'd class as truly unisex.

mum2be2boys · 20/02/2017 17:00

I'd consider all to be unisex names (maybe with the exception of Riley and Brogan), but my first impression on hearing the name would be...

Boys: Ronnie, Charlie, Riley, Jordan, Ashley, Emerson, Phoenix, Brodie, Brogan

Girls: Frankie, Sydney, Morgan, Aubrey, Addison, Mackenzie

MrsHathaway · 20/02/2017 17:06

Girls:
Frankie
Ronnie
Sidney/Sydney
Morgan
Riley
Ashley
Addison
Emerson
Mackenzie

Boys
Charlie
Aubrey
Phoenix
Brodie
Brogan

MrsHathaway · 20/02/2017 17:08

Logic: in my experience people use "unisex" names for girls more than for boys, because patriarchy: there is nothing in the world worse than having someone think your son is a girl.

MissTakesOurMaid · 20/02/2017 17:10

Now I've read the thread I was amazed how many people think Aubrey is a girls name. Then I googled. Looks like the Americans are up to their usual tricks using traditional male names for girls.

this is Aubrey

All boys, although I have known girls called Morgan and Sydney, Frankie, Charlie, Ashley and Jordan.

HollyJollyDillydolly · 20/02/2017 17:28

I only thought Aubrey was a girl because of teen mom Blush

Notso · 20/02/2017 17:36

Ewan Grin the Aubreys I know/know of are a drag queen, four year old girl a female cat and one of the Moms from teen mom has a daughter called Aubrey.

Soubriquet · 20/02/2017 17:39

I have a friend who has a little girl called Aubree

MaudOnceMore · 20/02/2017 17:40

I consider them all to be boys' names - my dad's name and a friend's son's name are in there - but, if I heard that somebody had recently given one of those names to a baby, I'd probably assume it was a girl and the parents were jumping on the celebrities naming their daughter James bandwagon.

Catherinebee85 · 20/02/2017 17:45

All boys except for Frankie and Ashley. I don't like any of them but I'm aware that'd not what you're asking!

Ontopofthesunset · 20/02/2017 17:57

They're all originally boys' names but I have known girls called Frankie (Francesca), Ronnie (Veronica), Charlie (Charlotte) and Morgan. I know of girls called Jordan and Mackenzie but have never met any.

ThenBellaDidSomethingVeryKind · 20/02/2017 18:00

Frankie - girl (might be because I know one)
Ronnie - boy
Charlie - boy
Sidney/Sydney - first spelling boy, second spelling girl
Morgan - girl
Riley - don't know!
Jordan - don't know! Genuinely unisex I think
Ashley - boy
Aubrey - boy
Addison - boy
Emerson - boy
Mackenzie - girl
Phoenix - boy
Brodie - boy
Brogan - girl

MegaBlocksBaby · 20/02/2017 18:02

Ashley, Addison, McKenzie and Brogan are all girls to me.

The rest are really boyish and I'd be surprised to come across a girl called it.

MamaLazarou · 20/02/2017 18:23

I have a strong aversion to girls being called names ending in 'son'. It just seems wrong to me!

BaggyCheeks · 20/02/2017 18:25
