Short and sweet classic girls names

My second baby is due in May. We're not sure if it's a girl or boy but already have a boy's name picked.

Names we like (and agree on!) but aren't set on yet are:

May (too little girly?)
Maive (Ithink its beautiful but it rhymes with my husband's name, Dave; plus not so keen on the mythology behind it)
Esther (Love this!)

.....and then we get stuck!

Can anyone suggest some classic, short and sweet girl's names that we might like. I like older names and 'proper' names if that makes sense. Something that would do well for her into adulthood. But that is classicly beautiful - and not done to death!

I think I might be very fussy!!

Big sister is Beth.

I really love the name Jane. It's one I never hear mentioned on here but I hope it gets a comeback.

BertrandRussell · 18/02/2017 07:49

It's names like Jane that always make me a bit Hmm when people say "Oh, we wanted to be sure there weren't 6 in her class-that's why we had to call her Asgaroth"......

Love the nickname suggestions for esther! I'm loving that name more and more! Just need to work on my hubby as he's on the fence with that one! He wants May.

Interesting that several people have suggested Jane! It must be set for a revival! It's a little plain but I'd personally always choose it over some of the more out there modern names!

Sugarpie - so many of those names I like but DH has rejected! Haha!

Brollsdolls - Esther May is beautiful actually! But we choose middle names that come from our parents/grandparents/great grandparents

My sister is an Esther. I love it yet she hates it as she's never known another one.

We've never shortened it.

My suggestions aren't all quite the classics you asked for but seemed to fit somehow.

Maeve, not Maive.

RuthB4 · 19/02/2017 21:53

Maeve still rhymes with Dave unfortunately. I think we've ruled that one out for good. Such a beautiful name though!

I adore the name Laura! But my sister is Laura!

I love Ada, Kate, Tess..... and i hadn't thought of Bianca! It's actually quite sweet!
I love some of your name suggestions! Dora is quite sweet but don't think I'd be brave enough to use it, and I know DH wouldn't go for it!

At the moment I think we are still deliberating between Esther (my favourite) and May (DH's favourite). I've still got another 11 weeks to go... and it could be a boy!

I have a Joanna and a Beth

RuthB4 · 19/02/2017 22:04

Ahh ecuse! Lovely taste in names! Grin I really like Joanna but not so keen on the inevitable shortening to Jo! Beth is simply beautiful isn't it?!! Hard to find another like it!

Ruthiesj · 19/02/2017 22:12

Ruth I also have a sister called Laura! Good combo obviously.

ecuse · 19/02/2017 22:23

I didn't at first, either. So far it has been less inevitable than I thought. She's as often Joanna or Jojo actually. But she does get Jo too, and it has grown on me. She's only 5 so I'm not sure which version will prevail yet. What drives me NUTS is her (paternal) grandparents calling her Joanne. IT'S A WHOLE DIFFERENT NAME! But I have so far avoided rocking the boat on that score.

Dogsmom · 21/02/2017 22:46

I'm an Esther and 99% of the time it isn't shortened but if it is then it's Est or Es, it is a name people often get wrong though, it's rare people put the H in it unless they stick it at the beginning and in cards I'm often Easter and have also been an Edna and Espher!

Having said all that I do love my name and get complimented on it.

LexieLulu · 21/02/2017 22:49

My DD is called Alice, short and classic I think. Other names I liked were Anna and Lucy xx
