Thanks Smile. I know my OP is a bit short but I love Elizabeth with the nn Lizzie but wondered if it was a bit of a weak and meek name. Eliza, Elizabeth and so on aren't meek in my view but I am worried that there is something about 'Lizzie' that sounds grey and very 'little girl'... Iykwim.

I don't personally like Lizzie but I don't see it as meek in anyway. It sounds stronger than Eliza to me for some reason.

Of course not, Elizabeth Bennett is Lizzie, she is the opposite of meek.

Also with a name like Elizabeth or similarly Catherine (one which people know the merriad shortened versions available)you will find when she goes to school her peers will pick out their nickname.
My cousin is an Elizabeth and her mother was always very strict about her being Elizabeth or Libby at a push. They hated the thought of Liz and Lizzie. You guessed it she is now in her mid-twenties and mostly known as Liz.

I don't see it as "meek" but it's very dated, makes me think of that exercise woman from the 80s/90s.

I love Elizabeth, prefer the shortening Beth, Libby or Betsy.

Lizzie is ok made me think of lizzie dripping didnt know why so googled and was a book/tv show (I am old) not many will think of that Grin
but it doesn't have to shorten I know an 9 yr old elizabeth and she is elizabeth everywhere no nn occasionaly a lizabet due lazy london accents but thats it!

I know an Elizabeth who goes by Lizzie and whilst she is a very gentle natured person, I wouldn't say meek! I really like the versatility of the name Elizabeth - I know two with the nicknames Libby and Beth, which are lovely.

Elizabeth Bennett is my favourite ever literary character Smile
So it definitely makes me think of her, which is a good thing!
Personally I think Betsy and Eliza are much more "dated" than Lizzie, but I suppose PPs mean that Lizzie has gone out of fashion and the other nicknames are back in.
One of the best things about the name Elizabeth is the number of nickname options. You and she will have a lot of flexibility.

Thank you everyone. Maybe Elizabeth isn't right as I am not 100% about Lizzie.

What do people think about Catherine, Isobel, Sophie in comparison to Elizabeth?

IS Lizzie basically dated and boring?

I like Catherine as much as I like Elizabeth, Cat/Cate are good nicknames but Cathy/Cath have the same "dated" feel as Lizzie or Liz. IMO anyway!

Isobel and Sophie are more popular at the moment but I don't think they will ever not be commonly used, they're classics.

Please be aware if you introduced your daughter to me as "Lizzy" I wouldn't even think "oh gosh that's dated" let alone say it, I just wouldn't use the name for a child of my own. If you like it go for it!

I don't think Lizzie is dated and boring, maybe some people do, but it's what you think that's important. Anyway, if you don't like Lizzie as a nickname there are plenty of other options! I don't understand why you'd rule out Elizabeth completely because of it.

Of the younger (under 16) Elizabeth's I know one is always Elizabeth, one is Liza and the other is Bet or Betty.

I think Elizabeth, Catherine, Isobel, Sophie are all nice safe names. Sophie is probably my favourite and Isobel my least favourite.

Lizzie is a lovely name. Not meek at all. DD is sometimes Lizzie as it's a bit of a mix her two names and I have a very dear friend called Lizzie

The first two Lizzies I can think of were pretty much opposite characters - one quiet and good-natured, the other more outgoing and tough in character.

I don't think of Lizzie as dated or boring, because I haven't met many Lizzies (although I would think of Liz, Elizabeth and Catherine that way TBH). I like Beth (Bethany as full name?) and Liza, but not Libby/Betty/Eliza.

I really like the name Sophie (or even better, Sophia). I like Isobel (and Isabella) but it's really popular at the moment, if that bothers you?

Sophie Isobel would be a lovely name.

I love it purely because of Elizabeth (Lizzie) Bennett. Elizabeth is so versatile too;
