I teach a Lizzie and believe me, there is nothing meek about her!!

RuthB4 · 14/02/2017 08:41

No way is Lizzie dated and boring - or meek! I think of Lizzie as being spunky, fiesty, confident and full of fun! I love it!

I very nearly called my daughter Elizabeth because it's such a beautiful name and in my opinion ALL of the possible nicknames are fab! And to give your daughter a name with so many possible nicknames is awesome!

Do it!! MUCH prefer Lizzie (or Elizabeth) to Sophie, Isabel and Catherine!

Florrie21 · 14/02/2017 17:26

I worked with a Lizzy who was lovely, and not at all weak/ meek. Catherine is beautiful, my sisters name. She is known as Rin to family, never Cathy or cath. Sophie is my niece and she is completely beautiful inside and out and very smart. My other niece is Elizabeth but us known by her middle name. Beth is fab too.

We have all of the names you mentioned in our family, although Isabelle instead of Isobel....so I love them all. Very classic and beautiful. They won't date.

reuset · 14/02/2017 19:01

I like Lizzie or Bess/Bessie. Whilst I usually harp on about not caring about popular names, every other girl seems to be Eliza round here at the moment (most as stand alone names), so I'd use a different shortening, personally.

reuset · 14/02/2017 19:06

No, I don't think of Lizzie as meek, dated or boring. Though I know of a young one who is the very opposite, you see. I think Beth's becoming a bit dated actually

Isobel, Sophie are ;lovely, but I prefer Catherine and Elizabeth easily.

DrSeuss · 14/02/2017 19:11

I have an Elizabeth, named after Miss Bennett, known to all as Lizzie. The whole family just fell about laughing at the idea of the five year old firebrand in our house being meek!

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 14/02/2017 19:43

I LOVE Lizzie but all the Lizzie's I knew at school are now Liz, and I don't like Liz at all!

spankhurst · 14/02/2017 19:45

My first thought was Thin Lizzie, then Lizzie Bennett, then Lizzie Dripping! I like it, though.

reuset · 14/02/2017 19:57

Was Lizzie Dripping the witch or the girl, or neither? Grin I should probably have a quick search.

museumum · 14/02/2017 19:59

Was Lizzie somebody not an axe murderer or something?

justlikekatycarr · 14/02/2017 20:01

Lizzie Boden.

Shockers · 14/02/2017 20:02

One of my favourite people is called Lizzie. She's gentle and kind, but definitely not meek. She's in her early 20s and knows her own mind, but has a lovely sense of fun. I'd be very proud if she were my daughter.

Biscuitsneeded · 14/02/2017 20:02

Lizzie is much nicer than Isabel, Sophia etc of which (though they are lovely names) there are billions. I think it's a great name. Agree there are a lot of Elizas currently. Lizzie is a bit more 60s/70s and hence due a revival!

LumelaMme · 14/02/2017 20:04

Lizzie dated? Confused

I know two teenaged Lizzies. I wouldn't tangle with either of them - they are neither dated nor meek!

Riversleep · 14/02/2017 20:08

The thing I like about Elizabeth is that there are so many variables you/ she can use. It would be very difficult to hate your name when you can be Elizabeth, Eliza, Beth, Ella etc etc. I only have boys but if I had a girl, she would have been Eliza.

babyblabber · 14/02/2017 20:23

The only Lizzie I know (or have ever known) is a feisty whirlwind of a 4 year old so defo not Keri or dated in my eyes!

Velvian · 14/02/2017 20:42

I have an Elizabeth & she is Beth.

Fackorf · 14/02/2017 20:51

I am an Elizabeth.

I don't really like it Sad

People always pronounced it Uh Liz Uh Buff, which I think sounds horrible, although the full name looks pretty worn down I think.

I now go by Liz so people have less to mangle.

I used to be so jealous of the Katies and the Sarahs.

Fackorf · 14/02/2017 20:52

Worn should say written

user123691 · 15/02/2017 12:24

I love Elizabeth. Eliza, Libby, Ellie, Elise ( French for Elizabeth), Lilly and ZaZa are my favourite shortnings. I also like Lizzie for a little one. I think Betty and Betsy are the old lady names of all the shortnings.

My other favourite is Catherine.

Lochan · 16/02/2017 06:51

Elizabeth and Catherine are both wonderful classic names with lots of scope for nicknames. Isobel and Sophie are also lovely.

Lizzie isn't dated and both the Lizzie's I know have been absolutely kick ass and seriously impressive so I don't have any negative associations.

Bear in mind, regardless of which nick name you choose ultimately it's the child who will choose their nickname.

Eg my DS loves his full name but only allows us to use the short form, everyone else is very politely told to use the full form and as a result will tend to call him the full form mostly too.

So you may choose Lizzie or Katie and she'll turn round one day she'd 7 or 8 and say from now on she's going to be Lisbeth or Kit. .
