Alba or Besiana

Hi - both of these names are pretty normal for girls names in my country but I was wondering if either sounded better (or terrible) to UK ears as we live in the UK.

  • Alba
  • Besiana

I prefer Besiana but would love your thoughts.

Thanks.

Alba is the brand name of a TV just to let you know that. I like besiana. I think people might shorten it to Bessie, something to be aware of.

OneWithTheForce · 06/02/2017 09:41

Actually I like Alba too! Sorry no help at all! Grin

BoboChic · 06/02/2017 09:41

Besiana isn't pretty in English and Bessie is a nickname for Elizabeth that was given to housemaids and is now totally passé.

Alba is all right.

OneWithTheForce · 06/02/2017 09:47

'Pretty' is an opinion, not a fact Wink

GeorgeTheHamster · 06/02/2017 09:52

I don't think Besiana is pretty in English either, it looks on the page like bestial. Bess would be nice as a nickname though. Alba is nice in English. Does it mean white?

BoboChic · 06/02/2017 09:54

The baby names threads are all about opinions.

10Betty10 · 06/02/2017 09:56

I like Alba. It's the name of the daughter in The Time Traveller's Wife by Audrey Niffeneger and she is pretty awesome. Think it sounds better with an English accent than Besiana.

10Betty10 · 06/02/2017 09:57

I wouldn't worry too much about the TV brand- I can't remember the last time I saw one of their products, think they're quite an old brand.

Yes, but we don't state them as if they are fact.

megletthesecond · 06/02/2017 10:00

Alba was an old tv brand. For some reason I can't imagine it as a girls name now.

Besiana is lovely.

Frazzled2207 · 06/02/2017 10:01

Again I think of the Time Travellers wife with Alba. Also know a baby Alba.
The tv brand is ancient, don't think that's a concern.
Besiana isn't great in English, sounds a bit made-up, though I'm guessing it's not.

MrsJayy · 06/02/2017 10:02

I prefer Alba i am not keen on the second 1 sorry. Alba is Gaelic for Scotland

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 06/02/2017 10:04

Alba is lovely. The only way I could use Besiana is if she was forever know as Anna, which misses the point somewhat.

Madbengalmum · 06/02/2017 10:05

I like alba. Hate Besiana.

Twoevils · 06/02/2017 10:06

Alba would be my choice of the two. There is a similar name Alma which I prefer more.

BoboChic · 06/02/2017 10:08

Most of us are clever enough not to need it spelling out on every single post Wink

Dollygirl27 · 06/02/2017 10:17

Alba sounds a bit masculine to me I love Besiana though

EggsEleven · 06/02/2017 10:20

How do you pronounce Besiana? It is pronounced Bessie-Anna? I've never heard of it before but it sounds quite sweet imo. I think I prefer Alba though.

elQuintoConyo · 06/02/2017 10:21

Don't like Besiana, sounds harsh and clumsy.

Alba in Spanish means 'dawn'. You'll be able to get a TON of tat with her name on if she so wishes when she is older - pens, keyrings etc Grin

SeveredPixieBits · 06/02/2017 10:27

Alba is gorgeous. I don't like Besiana, sorry.

Seriouslytoomuchlego · 06/02/2017 10:29

Thanks for the replies so far. I think Alba does mean "white" in Latin and some other languages but not to us. Besiana has some connotations of "keeping a promise" or something like that which I quite like.

Nickname if Besiana would probably be Ana - but I guess as she grew others might decide something different.

PS ... the margarine makes Flora (as a 3rd option) a no-go - is that right?

Seriouslytoomuchlego · 06/02/2017 10:32

Oh - and pronounciation is sort of Bessie-Anna or more like Bessie-Ya-Na - if that makes sense!

Mummamayhem · 06/02/2017 10:34

Albanian names? Both lovely prefer alba. And flora is nice too.

goldenrachita · 06/02/2017 10:41

I quite like both Alba and Besiana. Besiana would be considered more unusual here and your abbreviation of Ana is nice.
I really don't like Flora. Not because of the margarine; I just don't like the sound of it.

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 06/02/2017 10:43

Besiana does not sound nice to me at all. Alba is beautiful.
