Nicknames for James

Hi,

We have called DS (7 weeks) James and intended to call him this but we are finding that we are calling him Jamie some of the time. He seems to suit it. Family members have also asked us which nickname we are using.

It got me thinking, what do you think of the different nicknames for James? What is your favourite/least favourite?

I can think of:

Jamie
Jim
Jimmy
Jay

I love Jim and Jimmy but really hate Jay and Jamie.

Jimbo
Also Jimmy and Jamie

We had a jimbo/jambo james at school

DS is James Robert and gets JimBob

My mums dog is called James and he gets called Jimmy , personally I'd try and stick with James ,no nn needed it's a lovely name .

I have a teenage James. It's my favourite boys name.

He was Jamie most of the time when he was little, but is now usually James. I still call him Jamie or Jamesie occasionally, or Jimbobs! His siblings call him Jimmy when they want to annoy him.

Jem is possibly my favourite.

I absolutely refuse to have DS's name shortened by anyone.

So I called him "Woo", "Wooster" and "Puppystarpipistrelle".

I think Jamie is a good one for when he's little, I think Jim sounds a bit harsh for a little boy. You've picked a great name though OP.

I'm the exact opposite of NotToday - I like Jamie and Jay but not Jim or Jimmy. The other nicknames I can think of are Jem or Jamesy.

James is related to Jacob so you could also go for Jake or even Coby but the link is less obvious.

I would probably let a nickname "evolve" naturally though.

I have a James. A twat work colleague though it was really funny to call him Jimmy/Jim because she knew I hated it. Both truly awful, as is Jimbo.

I don't mind Jamie but DS just gets James, no nickname.

Jamie is my favourite but James on its own is great too.

I find it strange that you have family asking what nickname you are using. Why do people assume you are using any? I have a William who is never shortened (so far, he's only 2) and no one has ever asked me what nickname we plan to use.

I call mine jamesie lots, and jimmyboy a bit...

My James is nearly 16 and has been known as Jim or Jimbob by family for his entire life. He prefers to be called James and his friends and teachers know him as such, but I've told him he'll always be my Jimbob!

I come from Glasgow and "Jimmy" is the street name you'ld use to ask a question, eg what's the time Jimmy, has the 39 bus been Jimmy, got a light Jimmy etc.... A kind of familiar friendly expression.

I have a James - he gets James / Jam / JimJam and Spud.

Never, ever Jamie.

I know Jimmy, Jimbo, Jim and Jammy. I don't like Jammy or Jamie.

I have a 12 year old James and with family and friends he's always James.

I get away with Jimbob and Jamesina-Belle.
His little brother winds him up no end with Jammy-Boy.

From the usual nicknames I like Jamie best for a baby/toddler, though Jim best for teen/adult nickname.

DH is James. He says he prefers just being James but doesn't mind some nicknames.

I call him James or Jam.
FIL normally calls him Jim/Jimmy - fairly certain I've heard him say Jimbo as well, and Jamesie.
MIL sometimes calls him Jampot which I think it's adorable (he's nearly 30!).
SIL calls him Jay.

His GM was the only one allowed to call him Jamie. I really like Jamie but can't see DH as one.

James is such a lovely name, and only one syllable, so a nickname isn't essential.

I like Jamie, Jay and Jem.
Dislike Jim, Jimmy and (ugh) Jimbob.

I quite like Jam or Jim-jams as a silly nickname, would probably keep it in the family though - not one for school

I also wouldn't shorten a James. It's easy to say, James.

I like James but none of the nicknames.

I have a James. My dad tried to call him Jamie when he was born. Nipped that in the bud, I can tell you.

If he decides he wants to shorten it when he's older I will weep be ok with it, but while I'm in charge, he goes by his full name.

Jem is nice.

Had an utterly gorgeous cat called James, which mostly got shortened to Jimbles.
