Someone stole my name!!!

Well they didn't steel it.. but have a friend on Facebook who's just had her baby 3 weeks early and called it same first name and same middle name as what we were going to call ours!! And it had taken ages for us to pick.

Don't really know her that well but have quite a few mutual friends. Don't live in the same area.

It's not a top 100 name. Should I keep the name or back to drawing board?

Just use it.

Soubriquet · 31/01/2017 17:25

Yep just use it.

You don't know her, so do what you want

SorrelSoup · 31/01/2017 17:26

Use it.

ButtfaceMiscreant · 31/01/2017 17:27

If you aren't going to socialise with them it wouldn't cross my mind not to. One of DH's friend's housemate's from uni (tenuous link but possibly similar to yours) called their DD our DD's name but reversed the first and middle names and they were born about 5/6 weeks apart. We may socialise in the future but also may not. Doesn't bother us, and clearly doesn't bother them (our DD was born first).

She's a Facebook friend, they don't count

Itsworldwar3outthere · 31/01/2017 17:29

Surely you didn't think you would be the sole owner of that name? It's a lovely name and by coincidence someone else has also chosen that name.

MustBeLoopy390 · 31/01/2017 17:30

I'd use it. At the end of the day, your child will share names with others (unless you go for a out-there name/spelling) and I don't get the fuss sometimes.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 31/01/2017 17:39

Yes, keep the name.

buckyou · 31/01/2017 17:52

It's not a top 100 name, and I think it's the first name / middle name combo that's made me think it's unlucky we've picked the same!

I messaged her about it (we've been in touch recently on FB) and she's not bothered. I'm just worried people will think I've copied!

You can't not use a name you want for your child, that they will have for the rest of their lives, because other people might think you copied them. I know this because I changed my dd's name after a celebrity used the same name six weeks before and now, ten years later I wonder why I ever thought it was an issue.

AmeliaJack · 31/01/2017 18:18

Use it. She sounds like a very sensible woman.

KlingybunFistelvase · 31/01/2017 18:35

Both the first and middle name thing is a crazy coincidence (unless the middle name is rose, Grace, may / Mae or rae)!

I'd just use it. Wouldn't bother me and it doesn't bother her so think it's fine.

buckyou · 31/01/2017 18:35

OK, glad people think it's not a big deal. Will keep the name!

The name is Jasper James BTW. In case you were wondering!

KlingybunFistelvase · 31/01/2017 18:37

Gorgeous name op! Definitely use it.

ABCFamily · 31/01/2017 19:30

I also know a Jasper James, born last year. Sounds like it's a popular combination.

SummerBobbi · 31/01/2017 19:33

I'd still use it if you have your heart set on it. Jasper isn't a top 100 but it's definitely a surprisingly common one as I've found out (I have one and he's one of two in his class).
I think it's a lovely combo :)

strawberrypenguin · 31/01/2017 19:36

Lovely name. Maybe give him a second middle name as well if you're worried about it.

Janey50 · 31/01/2017 19:39

I have read so many threads on MN lately about 'name stealing' that I think it would be a very good idea if prospective parents didn't divulge their chosen name(s) to other parents to be. Or at least, fib a little,be a bit vague or mention a few to reduce the risk of stealing.

SorrelSoup · 31/01/2017 19:48

But this isn't stealing. It's two parents who have come up with the same name and not divulged it. I was in this situation and it could've been avoided if we had divulged.

buckyou · 31/01/2017 20:11

They haven't stolen it, I said that in the OP. It's just an unfortunate coincidence. But she's the only person I know having a baby around the same time.. and I scroll down my FB and he's called bloody jasper James!

OP posts:
GreatScot8 · 31/01/2017 20:13

I think Jasper is rising in popularity. I know two born in the last 18-ish months. And James is, of course, a classic middle name.

Don't worry about it, OP. It's a lovely name. Smile

reuset · 31/01/2017 20:35

I'd keep it, OP
