Should we stay safe, or go for the name we love (that's seen as 'made-up' and 'chavvy')?

What the title says! I'd rather not say what the unusual name is, as it's rare. I like 1 spelling of it.

Or Olivia Grin

I like Olivia, but love the other name. Should we just go for it?

I think parents generally regret naming children unusual names, not the other way round.

PoniesandProsecco · 29/01/2017 22:11

Olivia!

crapfatbanana · 29/01/2017 23:22

I can't quite make up my mind if it's ok or awful. I like Amber, it's the Leigh bit that makes it fussy.

Hyphenated it's not as bad, but still a bit of a mouthful. The more I say it the more I want to say Ann Boleyn. It's the way the buh and lee sounds flow together.

Amelie, Emmeline, Kimberley, Ashleigh, Ebony, Everly, Emily, Aimee-Leigh all somehow work better.

EmmaJade25 · 29/01/2017 23:47

Olivia is boring, go for Amberleigh. It's your child, sod what other people's opinions are. after pushing a melon out name that melon whatever you damn like. I named my daughter Phia - people got over it

FineLookingHighHorse · 30/01/2017 13:52

Chavvy names are only a problem if you fear that your child may live up to that particular stereotype.

Smart women dont have such concerns.
We name our children names that we love and sod the self conscious naysayers with their children who require a suffix to differentiate them from the myriad other Olivias in their class/university/office/chambers/retirement home.

Go with bloody Amberleigh.
She'll be marvellous Grin

GatoradeMeBitch · 30/01/2017 13:57

Use the name you love!

I think parents generally regret naming children unusual names, not the other way round.

Not in my case. I went with a classic biblical boys name, and my DS hates it. He thinks it's boring, and wants to rename himself something quite out there. And I don't blame him really!

Redpramlady · 30/01/2017 14:15

I really like it! It's pretty and not too difficult to say/remember I can't see why not at al!
I like different and it's not too out here!
I think go with what you love more than what everyone else says. Otherwise you may regret it!

KlingybunFistelvase · 30/01/2017 16:58

Use the name you love! It really doesn't strike me as a strange or in any way offensive name.

It isn't my cup of tea and I like Olivia, but you love it so use it. I wouldn't say that if it was a really terrible name, but it really isn't that bad at all.

Redpramlady · 30/01/2017 17:16

Feeling like I have to comment again just to say

I really really like it! I honestly can see why people don't!
And I judge myself to be pretty normal ha!

throwingpebbles · 30/01/2017 17:45

I really like it!! And I quietly regret giving my children "normal" names. my boy is one of 3 with his name in his year (90kids) - he even signed off his letter to Santa with his first name and surname!

HocusPOTUS · 30/01/2017 21:39

Olivia isn't boring. Its popular, yes...because its a nice name and not weird.

Amberleigh is a small town stripper name. Honestly.

Poppins2016 · 30/01/2017 21:50

Another vote for Olivia.

However, if you go with the other option, Amberley is the prettier spelling (in my opinion). It is the name of a village in West Sussex (but who cares - India and Florence are places too and they're pretty names).

NataliaOsipova · 30/01/2017 21:50

How old is your DS, Gatorade? I'm wondering if he might come back to thanking you for it when he's older....!

TalkingofMichaelAngel0 · 30/01/2017 21:54

I like the name but much prefer the amberley spelling.

pepperpot99 · 30/01/2017 22:22

Keigh-cee?

Redpramlady · 31/01/2017 07:19

I do like the amberley spelling too

KlingybunFistelvase · 31/01/2017 07:25

I used to live near Camberley, so the Amberley spelling just reminds me of that! It still isn't terrible though.

lanbro · 31/01/2017 07:34

I like Amberley, but the only time I've ever heard it was on Jeremy Kyle....

CactusFred · 31/01/2017 07:44

How about safer but not as common (lovely name but v popular atm) Olivia?

LiquoriceWheel · 31/01/2017 08:16

Amberleigh is really pretty. Choose the name you love!

LiquoriceWheel · 31/01/2017 08:28

What about Hadley, Wellesley ( pronounced wellz-lee) Waverley, Yardley or Romilly? Amberleigh has a very elegant, Ivy League aura about it, I think. Don't settle for a name- if you really look hard there are some real gems out there. Ignore the meanies on here Smile

daisydaisychain · 31/01/2017 09:00

If you love it you might regret not using it so ultimately it's up to you. A wider range of names are used now so it's probably not going to be an issue having something a bit unusual. I personally would come up with a third option though if it were me - something classic but not quite as well used as Olivia over the last decade. However, it is true that the top names are less well used than in the past, so having a very popular name is also probably less of an issue than it was 30 years ago.

Smitten1981 · 31/01/2017 09:07

I have a very unusual name, I was definitely the only person called it in the year I was born and yes, I do have to constantly spell it out and correct pronunciation but I'm used to that, it doesn't annoy me at all. I love having a unusual name.

mellongoose · 31/01/2017 09:24

Me too, Smitten. I wonder if we have the same name. I've only met another 'me' once and it was spelt differently.

That said I prefer the Amberly spelling of OPs choice. Olivia is nice but a bit 'meh' these days.

Purplebluebird · 31/01/2017 09:48

I love Amber, Amber-Leigh is also fine, but looks nicer imo. However I don't think the name is that bad! Amber Olivia? Both are two lovely names that I really like :)
