Should we stay safe, or go for the name we love (that's seen as 'made-up' and 'chavvy')?

What the title says! I'd rather not say what the unusual name is, as it's rare. I like 1 spelling of it.

Or Olivia Grin

I like Olivia, but love the other name. Should we just go for it?

My DD's middle name is Amberley. 3 syllable 1st and surname so Amber didn't flow. OH got the idea from a TV show he watched as a kid. Go for it!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/01/2017 09:43

I know 2 girls called amberleigh/amberlee. I didn't realise this was a rare name. They are both shortened to Amber or, unfortunately, amb.

I'd go with Olivia. It's a lovely Name, pretty for a girl and I think it's very classy for an adult too.

ilovesushi · 28/01/2017 09:49

The one you love. It sounds pretty to me.

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/01/2017 09:50

Olivia. Amberleigh is dreadful.

GerdaLovesLili · 28/01/2017 09:50

Amberleigh? Hmmm that'll be Burleigh for short in 5 minutes flat. Do you really want that?

ememem84 · 28/01/2017 09:54

i quite like it. If you like it use it.

Fwiw my names Emily. I'm constantly seeing misspellings: emmerley emilie (aware this is a correct version) Emmalee emmaleigh emmielee

The best one I've had recently was a contact at work. Asked how my name was spelt. Thinking they meant with a "y" or an "ie" I said with a "y" then they sent me an email (Ccing my boss). Email never arrived in my inbox. The reason being they'd spelt "Emily with a y" as "Yemily" I suppose to be pronounced like the "y" in Yvonne. Or Yvette.

Stick with Olivia

TheElephantofSurprise · 28/01/2017 10:15

Amberleigh.

It's a house name.

But it isn't offensive.

Imbroglio · 28/01/2017 10:19

I've put my finger on what's wrong... but it might not mean anything to you or your family and friends and it's only a rhyme!

It's the opening line of Rebecca 'last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again...'

Nongoddess · 28/01/2017 10:20

Go with your heart! If you love it that's your answer. And I think it's nice! Unusual but not weird. Do it!

LosingDory · 28/01/2017 10:22

Olivia is one of the most boring "that'll do" names out there. If you really love Amberleigh then go for it

FrogletinaBallerina · 28/01/2017 10:23

I've grown up with one of the most popular (boring!) names from the 80s, and naming your child Olivia will mean she'll be one of a few in the class, constantly hear her name everywhere... it used to sound lovely, but I think it's a bit beige now (sorry any Olivias!)

Go with the name you love, not one you just like.

Sandsnake · 28/01/2017 10:29

To me Amberleigh sounds likes an old people's home, sorry but not a fan.

EatSpamAmandaLamb · 28/01/2017 10:32

Please sweet lord no. Amberleigh. She will never forgive you.

Thingvellir · 28/01/2017 10:32

I like the name Amber a lot.

To answer the original question, no I would not name my child something risky/chavvy. I just wouldn't. The risk of deeply regretting something your DD will be stuck with for life is too great. There are lots of names out there, try and find another one.

youarenotkiddingme · 28/01/2017 10:33

I actually don't see the problem with Amberleigh.

And I have a child with the straight forward name of Thomas!

harderandharder2breathe · 28/01/2017 10:38

Olivia, hands down

choppolata · 28/01/2017 10:48

Olivia always reminds me of Olivio spread.

NataliaOsipova · 28/01/2017 10:48

I don't get the current penchant for "unique" names. When I had my DC, I always thought I didn't want them to have names that people wouldn't know how to spell when they were told what they were (interesting to see a pp echo how annoying this is). My maiden surname was unusual and difficult to spell and I bloody hated it - was absolutely ecstatic to become a Mrs Smith just for that reason alone.

Also don't understand how a name becomes "overused". Is it really the end of the world of someone else has the same name as your child? Ironically, with my DCs, it's been some of the more so-called unusual names that have been duplicated in their classes/groups.

Olivia is lovely. Classic. One of the Shakespeare heroines. Sorry, OP - but Amberleigh sounds like the name of a village. I think Amber Leigh is much better (but nowhere near as nice - or, dare I say it - as classy as Olivia).

Foureyesarebetterthantwo · 28/01/2017 10:53

I don't might Amberleigh that much at all, but it will end up as 'Amber' so I think it depends how much you mind that.

I teach lots of students with quite strange names, I just look carefully when I type it out.

If you love it and will regret not doing it, do it- there are other little Amberleighs out there and MN is notoriously conservative (unless you want to call your child Mabel or Lettice in which case, go right ahead).

AmysTiara · 28/01/2017 10:56

Olivia is so dull and Amberleigh is so out there. Can you really not think of a happy medium. Like Amber or Amalie?

MissDallas · 28/01/2017 10:58

I know an Amberly! And she's not chavvy, she's very posh and has her own pony. I had assumed it was a posh Home Counties name.

The stress is on the 'AM' syllable. Is your option the same?

If so, I say go for it! Olivia is boring.

lemoncakes · 28/01/2017 10:59

I thought of the Shannara chronicles too like a pp. I like Amberley! Not keen on your spelling though.

albertcampionscat · 28/01/2017 11:01

Amberleigh with Olivia as middle name?

oleoleoleole · 28/01/2017 11:14

I think it's a masculine sounding name and one which she will spend her whole life hating and having to spell out. Don't do it!
