Critique our shortlist please!

I like long and mildly frilly names with lots of shortening options. DH likes classic but not boring names. We've agreed on a few:

Dominic
Nathaniel
Rowan
Benedict
Gregory
Laurence
Nicholas

I like Nathaniel best and DH likes Gregory.

Middle name will be Harry and surname is a single-syllable colour.

Thoughts?

We had Gregory and Benedict on our list. What about Vincent (on our list)? I'd avoid Laurence, because of the range of ways it can be spelt- I'd have spelt it Lawrence, for example, and it'll be a nuisance.

Of your chosen names, I'd say Nicholas, which surprises me as I didn't think I'd like it as a name, but you don't hear it so much now, and it's a classic name with a number of shortened versions, Nick, Nicky etc.

ShowMeTheElf · 10/01/2017 14:18

As a child my Christian and surname started with the same letter and I didn't like it. Just saying...

Staranise123 · 10/01/2017 14:57

I see Laurence as a girls name (boys version of Laurent).

I like Rowan and Dominic from your suggestions. Or how about Marcus or Quentin?

Staranise123 · 10/01/2017 14:57

sorry, boys version IS Laurent

Blossomdeary · 10/01/2017 15:01

Nathaniel

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/01/2017 15:01

I like Nathaniel and Nicholas.

CakeRattleandRoll · 10/01/2017 15:38

My favourites are Nathaniel and Benedict.
Also like Gregory and Dominic.

ladyratterley · 10/01/2017 15:54

Peregrine, Benedict, Doyle?
These are all names of boys I went to school with Grin Will see if I can think of any more!

ScrambledSmegs · 10/01/2017 16:02

I like Gregory, you could shorten it to Rory if you aren't keen on Greg.

How about Rufus or Alexander (nn Xander if you want to be posh)

Most posh man I ever met was called St John, pronounced Sinjun. Although that could just have been because he barely opened his mouth enough to speak, let alone enunciate clearly.

tormentil · 10/01/2017 16:09

Roderick
Bartholomew
Tristram
Frederick

TinklyLittleLaugh · 10/01/2017 16:10

I do know siblings Dominic, Gregory and Benedict

Surely these parents must have some sort of weird monk fixation?

mumsnit · 10/01/2017 17:11

Laurence is most definitely a boys name Confused I have as ds called Laurence and never has the assumption been made that he's female!!

Fab list OP. I like Sebastian too although I didn't like the shortening so unfortunately took off my list as you can't control the nn they end up with! I also like Rufus as suggested above.

BertrandRussell · 10/01/2017 17:16

Lawrence is most definitely a boy's name in English.

Secretlythesame · 10/01/2017 18:11

Tinkly yes I think they might Grin

Staranise123 · 10/01/2017 19:38

Yes, Lawrence is a boys name.

Laurence is a French girls name, the female version of Laurent. It is pronounced with the emphasis on the -ence. Like Florence.

TheNaze73 · 10/01/2017 19:42

Where did you go to school ladyratterley? Hogwarts? Wink

EmmaWoodlouse · 10/01/2017 20:30

Haha, brilliant!

Thanks all - excellent suggestions and feedback. Hadn't thought of Rory as a nn for Gregory - I like it!

Also, I met a boy on holiday called Ethaniel.

Love Benedict and Laurence. Dominic as a runner up. Gregory and Nicholas are both a bit plain in comparison. Greg in particular doesn't seem to fit your criteria of classic or mildly frilly, maybe it's the pastry shop that did it :) but it also seems a bit 80s somehow.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 11/01/2017 04:17

Funny how Rowan to me is a girl's name! I know two of them.

I think Clarence is quite frilly. And Frederick.
