DH half Italian. DS due in a few short weeks, can't agree on a name but we jointly quite like:

Emilio (shortened to Emmy)
Angelo
Mauricio
Jacques (soft J)
Otto
Hunter
Ludovico (shortened to Ludo)
Yves (pronounced Eve)

There are more we've thrown around & DH mainly rejected will come back when I think of them.

Yes yes I know there's a mix of Italian / French / Other origins - we're not fussed about heritage, just having a unique name that's not too out there. Any thoughts or other suggestions welcome…

I like Otto, though definitely not Italian! Also Ludo is lovely.

Have you considered Nico?

Stalingrad · 30/12/2016 00:22

Do you live in the uK? If so if avoid called a boy Eve or Emmy. Eve is a ubiquitous girls' name in every playground at the mo. What about Emilio shortened to Milo?

I love Ludo and quite like Otto. Jacques is nice but hard to know quite how to say it.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 30/12/2016 00:22

I like Angelo best out of your list with Emilio and Ludovico second and third.

Astro55 · 30/12/2016 00:25

Love Emilio and Otto

What about Orry a Manx King?

(Please don't call him Eve)

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/12/2016 00:29

I like Angelo. Isn't that what Adele called her baby.
Other suggestions.
Giuseppe (J-Sep-ee)
Antonio
Mario
Luigi
Marco
Ricardo

Dozyoldtwonk · 30/12/2016 00:30

Ah yes, Nico was another thrown around - thanks for the reminder, Paperdoll

Stalin that's DH's concern with Yves in particular - can't get past the girl connotations he has a point unless you see it written down

Also on the list:

Romeo / Romy
Paolo
Remy

I actually feel quite comforted seeing the dislike for Yves for a boy - validates DH concerns I suppose I won't be showing him this thread, his 'I told you so' chimes will last for days

Rocco
Pablo
Franko
Luciano

Hunter

1horatio · 30/12/2016 11:44

ohh, Italian names!

Emilio (shortened to Emmy): love it. The shortening is, quite obviously, not particularly Italian but it's very cute.
Angelo: I really don't like it.
Mauricio: I'm not sure if people in the U.K. could pronounce that.
Jacques (soft J): how does the soft J fare in the U.K.? I personally don't know.
Otto: that's a perfectly fine name. Not participating Italian, but there wouldn't be any pronunciation issues.
Hunter: love it.
Ludovico (shortened to Ludo): my great grandfather's name. I personally love it and also like Ludovicus.
Yves (pronounced Eve): that's too girly in the UK.

What about Basil? Peregrine? Isaac? Roberto? Rupert? Milo? Lucian/Lucien?

Sophronia · 30/12/2016 12:26

I like Angelo best

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 30/12/2016 15:39

I like Rocco and my Renato.
Love Lorenzo.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 30/12/2016 15:40

Should say, Rocco, and my favourite name Renato ! 🙄

SausageSoda · 30/12/2016 16:38

I like Emilio and Otto from your list in that order. Also like Nico as a PP suggested.

Dozyoldtwonk · 30/12/2016 21:45

Thank you everyone…I think our shortlist for now has been whittled down to

Emilio (shortened to Emmy)
Ludo (but full name Ludovico)
Otto
Hunter
Paolo
Jacques (pronounced Jack, soft J)
Nico

Does Nico have a 'full' version or is it a name in itself?

I think Angelo & Yves may be struck off the list…first because I'll end up yelling out Ange day to day Grin & Yves because of the girl thing DH may have had a point all along

I think Nico stands for Nicola? But I might be wrong.

Love Emilio nn Emmy and Ludo (full name Ludovico)

1horatio · 30/12/2016 21:49

*Niccola

PaperdollCartoon · 31/12/2016 15:52

Nico is a full name in its own right. But I'm sure it can also be short for something.

ScarletSienna · 31/12/2016 16:53

Emilio is nice but Emmy is a girl's name to me (knowing a girl called Emmy!)

Ludovico and Otto are my favourites-I particularly like Otto! Hunter is a thing not a name iyswim.

Melstarrynight · 31/12/2016 17:17

Really like Otto. I also like ludo as it reminds me of the nice monster in labyrinth Grin

fueledbybacon · 31/12/2016 17:22

Domenico is also a full name for Nico nickname.

Riccardo
Giovanni
Matteo
Stefano
Leonardo
Marco
Alberto

Dozyoldtwonk · 02/01/2017 20:35

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! Any alternatives to Emmy as an easy 'natural' nickname for Emilio (thinking about it, I hardly ever call my daughter by her full name - three syllables)? I love the name, but it's a mouthful to say over & over again!

One of my current faves is Paolo…but again the shortening problem…also quite liking Renato (thanks to the poster who suggested), but Reny? Confused

QuandryQueen · 02/01/2017 20:36

Ludo for me ("I play" is the translation as I understand?)

Stalingrad · 02/01/2017 20:50

Milo (provinces My-low) for Emilio?

buttercup54321 · 03/01/2017 00:04

Matteo or Nico
