How do you pronounce Aaron?

This is our number one fave for baby due in Feb. However me and DH pronounce it differently. I'm not bothered as I think however it's pronounced it's a nice name. However DH really dislikes the way I pronounce it. I say "air un" and he says "ar un". I think many people would also say "air un" and DH says he would find that annoying. We have discussed changing the spelling e.g. to Aren but I like the original spelling better.

How would you pronounce it? Ideas for an alternate spelling or alternative name that sounds like DHs pronunciation? We would go for a similar sounding name beginning with A :)

There were 3 Aaron's in my year at school . All pronounced ah-run

museumum · 28/12/2016 09:19

I've heard it both ways and it's one of those names I don't like using as I'm never quite sure which way to say it.
I've got friends with an Arran. It's easy and in the same mold as the other island names (Lewis, Harris)

BertrandRussell · 28/12/2016 09:20

It's a Biblical name- the correct pronunciation is Air- un.

There are lots of other pronounciations but they are wrong!

CocoLoco87 · 28/12/2016 09:23

I pronounce Aaron as air-un

Surely to rhyme with Karen you spell it Arron?

Afreshstartplease · 28/12/2016 09:26

Ah-run

MyNewBearTotoro · 28/12/2016 09:29

Aaron = Ah-run

Aeron = Air-un

Where I grew up in Wales both Aaron and Aeron are fairly commonly used names but definitely a distinction in how the two are spelt and pronounced.

MollyHuaCha · 28/12/2016 09:39

"Rhymes with Karen"? I've known the name Karen spelled the same way to be pronounced three different ways:
Kair-un
Carr-in
Ca-run

For Aaron I've heard Air-un an Arr-un. I prefer the first, but happily accept the second too.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 28/12/2016 11:23

I know some one with an Aaron. Pronounced A-ron. Although quite a few people do mispronounce it as Air-ann though.

IAmNotTheOneWhoKnocks · 28/12/2016 11:25

For me it rhymes with Karen.

IAmNotTheOneWhoKnocks · 28/12/2016 11:27

Surely to rhyme with Karen you spell it Arron?

Then we might as well say "surely to be pronounced Air-un you'd spell it Airun?"

Either way the Aaron spelling is not particularly intuitive.

CalleighDoodle · 28/12/2016 11:27

Air run

Arran is probounced like karen. Ka- ren. Just in case anyone pronounces karen like care-on. (I knownone of those Hmm)

FannyWincham · 28/12/2016 11:27

How about Arlo?

TwoGunslingers · 28/12/2016 11:28

It's "erin" here, for your dhs pronunciation we would spell it with one A - Aron :)

Soubriquet · 28/12/2016 11:29

Ah-run here too

Never heard of Aaron for Air-run

bowchikkawowwow · 28/12/2016 11:29

I was always led to believe it was Ay-ron as in the biblical name but recently it seems to have become Arr-on

Dontrocktheboat · 29/12/2016 21:53

The correct biblical pronounciation is most definitely Air-on - as in Aaron Copland.

However, people will consistently pronounce wrongly until corrected.

Air-on pronounciation is a million times nicer. If you want the other pronounciation spell it Arran like the island.

MissBattleaxe · 29/12/2016 22:30

Totally agree with Dontrocktheboat

ElizaSchuyler · 29/12/2016 22:34

I used to say air run in my music store dent days but now would default to a ron (as in Burr Sir)

chocoholic89 · 29/12/2016 22:35

Air-run x

AuntJane · 30/12/2016 00:22

Which raises the question - how do you pronounce Karen? I've known the first syllable to sound as in cat, car and care.

Verbena37 · 30/12/2016 00:23

Air Ron

Otherwise it would be Arran

Out2pasture · 30/12/2016 00:26

all the fellows I know pronounce it arr-on (spelled aaron)
Karen is more kar-en not kar-on

PaperdollCartoon · 30/12/2016 00:28

Aaron to rhyme with Karen, don't like the Air-on pronounciation at all.

Also, I know an Arlen in his twenties, doesn't seem too unusual in practice. Definitely consider it if you like it. Harder to mispronounce as well Smile
