How do you pronounce Aaron?

This is our number one fave for baby due in Feb. However me and DH pronounce it differently. I'm not bothered as I think however it's pronounced it's a nice name. However DH really dislikes the way I pronounce it. I say "air un" and he says "ar un". I think many people would also say "air un" and DH says he would find that annoying. We have discussed changing the spelling e.g. to Aren but I like the original spelling better.

How would you pronounce it? Ideas for an alternate spelling or alternative name that sounds like DHs pronunciation? We would go for a similar sounding name beginning with A :)

There were two Aarons in DS's class at school. One pronounced it Airun, the other pronounced it Arron. It was a bit confusing at first, remembering which pronunciation to use for which child!

If I wasn't told I think I'd read Aaron as Airun.

This is a really helpful video about the pronunciation of names, Aaron included!

LucyBabs · 30/12/2016 00:33

I knew two Aarons one pronounced it Ar Un and the the other Air on. For years I thought they were two different names Blush

GingerMammaBear · 30/12/2016 00:33

I think you could have either! My friends just used this spelling and pronounced it "aarun"...like Arran!

Insanityprofanity · 30/12/2016 00:36

I have an Aaron, pronounced air-on. Hth x

Yamadori · 30/12/2016 00:39

I know two of them - both older teenagers now. One is pronounced 'Air-un' and the other 'Arran'. Both of them would get annoyed if their name is pronounced the opposite way round.

pieceofpurplesky · 30/12/2016 00:39

I have taught both pronunciations! So I guess either. I currently teach an Arun.

cantthinkofabloodyname · 30/12/2016 00:42

I have a friend named Aaron and his is pronounced A-ron

Mysterycat23 · 30/12/2016 05:42

Have added Arlo and Arran to the shortlist..

Thanks everyone! Will show the thread to DH later - Currently going through 5am pregsomnia...

@PaperdollCartoon interesting! Are you based in the UK? We were under the impression Arlen is more common in the US.

@mysterycat23

Yes, in the U.K. He's English as well. Definitely less common here and he's the only person I've met with that name but it's not one I thought 'oh that's strange' just fits. He's a pretty cool chap as well.

Arlo is also lovely, that would be on my list

AlmaMartyr · 30/12/2016 10:34

I've only ever heard Ah-run except on here.

Arlo is nice and I like Arlen too.

SaltedCaramelEverything · 30/12/2016 11:00

I would pronounce Aaron to rhyme with Karen. I have met an Aaron who wanted to be Air-an and every time I went to say his name I had to remember as to me it just wasn't natural with that spelling.

I know an Aron who emphasises the Ron part more.

I think Arlen is lovely, can't think of an obvious reason why they'd get bullied for it! Arlo is becoming popular but I think I prefer Arlen Smile

halcyondays · 30/12/2016 11:02

I have met both

SoupDragon · 30/12/2016 14:11

I would pronounce Aaron to rhyme with Karen.

I've known both a Karren and a Kair-on :o

Soozikinzi · 30/12/2016 16:59

My sons middle name is Aaron (Samuel Aaron Matthew ) and I say air-on but weirdly I prefer Ahrun as well .surely if you make the preferred pronounciation clear on starting nursery/ school etc it should be ok?

ViewBasket · 30/12/2016 17:26

Air-on

Leelaseye · 30/12/2016 17:59

I know a lovely young Arlen (aged 12 lives in UK) who has never been bullied because of his name AFAIK Smile

Diamondsandpears · 30/12/2016 18:45

If you like the air-run pronunciation then Aaran is the Scottish/Irish? way that I know of. Otherwise Arran is like the island and easily pronounced AFAIK

buttercup54321 · 30/12/2016 20:06

Rhymes with Karen and Darren

MiriAmmerman · 30/12/2016 20:19

I would say Air-un (as far as I know, that's the Hebrew pronunciation - all of the Jewish ones I know pronounce it that way).
If your DH wants to guarantee his preferred pronunciation I would say spell it Arran, as in the island.
I like them both, but they're different names to me.

whirliebird · 02/01/2017 15:55

I know both an Aaron (air on) and an Arron (aa ron) two different names, two different spellings with two different pronunciations. So I would pronounce Aaron as 'air on' x

Hushabyelullaby · 02/01/2017 16:28

I would say Ar-un to rhyme with Karen, I have a family member called Air-un but it is spelt Eiran potentially very outing

PatMullins · 02/01/2017 16:34

Ah-run

Aquamarine1029 · 02/01/2017 23:44

Air On.
