To wonder why Gemma is currently so unpopular? What do you think of the name?

I had to stay up yesterday evening and to keep me awake I started thinking about baby names for our 2nd child (I'm not pregnant yet, but depending on some developments we may start trying again after Christmas...).

Anyhow, I really like the name Gemma. It really works with my Italian heritage, the Italian part of the family could pronounce that one, it sounds lovely and I don't think there would be any issues with it in the UK (or am I wrong?).

So, do you like Gemma?

I really like it!

I've only known nice Gemmas and I don't think it sounds dated!

I don't think it's in the Kayleigh/Danielle bracket at all, they were the Saharan/Tracy of their day and I don't think it's like that at all.

I think it's lovely OP.

FizzBombBathTime · 18/12/2016 09:07

I'm 23! And called Jemma

I didn't realise it's an 80s name

Thanks op I feel all good now! I've always hated my name but this thread has made me feel really good about it 😂

MrsMeeseeks · 18/12/2016 09:47

There's nothing wrong with it at all, it's just not fashionable at the moment.

That's so sad. And actually the first comment that makes me go a bit Hmm May I ask why you don't like the name? Because imo it's really lovely, and just because I love a name, I don't want to use DD as a statement, you know?

Navy
Oh no, I appreciate your comments. Very very much, actually.

DD is Clarissa scandi-name virtue name.
So, DD2 (if DC2 is a DD) could be
Gemma Ingrid Prudence
Gemma Astrid Justice
Gemma Verity Marit (I think that's actually really pretty)
Gemma Frida Honor
Gemma Irene Honor
Gemma Ottilia Clemence

Something like this, I guess :)

The comment makes me go about Hmm about the name Gemma. Not about your comments.

Shoot 🙈

Because I think people named Gemma not liking their name is a stronger argument than fashion/80ies name etc...

I like Gemma. I know two Gemma's that are 40, both lovely, we're old school friends. I know a 10 year old Jemma.
It wasn't a name option for me because it means egg yolk in dh's language though Grin.

Jinglebells99 · 18/12/2016 10:25

There's a girl in my son's year called Gemma. She's 17 and has Italian grandmother, so was interested to hear about the Italian thing. I like it. Remember Noel Streafield had a book character called Gemma, but suppose that was from the eighties too. Not read the whole thread, but do you like Emma?

1horatio · 18/12/2016 10:26

Egg yolk 😂? May I ask what the language is? Just... if it's a popular language or something....

I really like the name Castor (Castor & Pollux, stars, etc...). But seeing as Castor is the name of the stomach loosening oil in the UK...

I like Jemma with a J.

EllyOlly · 18/12/2016 10:32

Never met a Gemma I didn't like Smile

I actually love the name Emma. It is not quite as brilliant as the name Gemma, but it is lovely. It's now in 2nd place. Below Gemma but above Antonia. Thanks 😊

I know Jemma, is pretty and cute. But it's just not as pretty as Gemma imo. It's not a Gem 😂😉

1horatio Jema is Portuguese for yolk, pronounced the same as Gemma, so living in the Algave wouldn't be an option. Although having said that one of the Gemma's I know lived in Brazil, as far as I know nobody snorted when she introduced herself.

Bundao · 18/12/2016 10:40

Sorry not jema it's gema.

I'm not sure, but maybe people in Latin America are a bit more name tolerant? I know a Milo that spent quite a lot of time in Peru and other South American countries, and he only got a few good natured comments about the chocolate drink...

I only know one Gemma and she's a nightmare. I cant warm to the name as a result. Although if I try to be objective it's a nice sounding name. And a little unusual.

Zhx3 · 18/12/2016 11:53

Clarissa is also beautiful op, you have good taste in names!

If I had another daughter she would be Cara. So I would have precious Gemma and beloved Cara :).

1horatio · 18/12/2016 12:07

josephine

We all have these names, I think I could never call my child Kevin. It has a very bad rep back home and the Kevin I've met in the U.K. was a brat with somewhat violent tendencies.
Too violent. You don't beat somebody up after sparring! (I could write a page ranting about parents that think violent boys [never seen it in the case of girls, tbh] need to learn how to fight better and even encourage violent behaviour😡😡).
But, I'm sure there are nice Kevins. I'm not trying to offend anybody here.

🤗 Blush... thank you. DH luckily likes them as well. (He only got veto rights for a few specified reasons. The trade off for not double-barrelling...)

Oh, and 3

I think Gemma and Cara sound lovely together. I really like it :)

horatio I don't know why I feel wierd about it! Always have done. I think it's partly to do with the fact that my dad chose it but I'm not too sure X

ThatsWhatYouDo · 18/12/2016 15:55

I've always thought it quite chavvy I know that's not a nice thing to say but I think it's in the same vein as Leanne or Kayleigh.

FizzBombBathTime · 18/12/2016 16:00

Hmm there's always one...

1horatio · 18/12/2016 16:53

that😉😉

I also have Antonia, Josephine, Araminta and Emma on my list. but Gemma is just too beautiful.
But tbh, I'm kind of hoping for a boy. Simply because I love the name Ignatius so much. And there are so many other absolutely fabulous boy's name.
