To wonder why Gemma is currently so unpopular? What do you think of the name?

I had to stay up yesterday evening and to keep me awake I started thinking about baby names for our 2nd child (I'm not pregnant yet, but depending on some developments we may start trying again after Christmas...).

Anyhow, I really like the name Gemma. It really works with my Italian heritage, the Italian part of the family could pronounce that one, it sounds lovely and I don't think there would be any issues with it in the UK (or am I wrong?).

So, do you like Gemma?

Gemma Collins ,? If you don't know who she is you are lucky she is a pain in the neck.

1horatio · 17/12/2016 12:26

Jemma looks a bit wrong to me... I know, it's a perfectly acceptable variant of Gemma. But... I'm not sure why I don't like it. Blush

Plus, Gemma was the wife of Dante Alighieri. So, Gemmas are in very good company, imo ;)

I'm clearly biased but I do think a lot of the popular names are very fucking twee atm. Seems like adding ie on the name for the sake of it. They're just going to get shortened in everyday use anyway, and then they're just as bog standard as everyone else.

Also the argument for a name not being "popular" is redundant, name them whatever you want. It's not a contest. Smile

1horatio · 17/12/2016 12:29

I know that popularity doesn't matter.

But if there's an Eva, Evie, Ava and Ada in one class... well, they are very lovely names. But, I personally, as a kid, would have been very annoyed, tbh.

Yeah if you like a name use it I would never be put off a name, andyeah it is Gemma not Jemma imo

MrsJayy · 17/12/2016 12:33

I have a very popular 1970s name probably the Evie of the day but it doesn't matter really

fledglingFTB · 17/12/2016 12:33

And yes, Gemma IS absolutely the only way to spell it Wink

I am fond of Jemima though.

1horatio · 17/12/2016 12:34

MRS

You seem to have referred to that Essex tv show? (Googled it).

I don't think she's that famous, right? And anyhow, if DC2 is a girl I'd be surprised if kids her age would know about her.

And I agree with the people saying 'Gem' is a lovely nickname.

It really is. I also lik Josephine, for example. But the nickname Josie... i personally really dislike. So, it's better if you like the more common nickname variants, I think.

I love it. Its a great choice IMO.

Aoibhe · 17/12/2016 12:40

I think it's a really nice name, soft, pretty, ends in 'a' which I always like.

It's a typical 80's name, a bit like Karen or Tracey, and that's probably why it's not popular.

1horatio · 17/12/2016 12:43

I don't like Karen or Tracey... ;)

But Gemma is an 80ies name I can get behind.

And I think it would make my Italian family very happy to feel acknowledged, they already moan that they don't see us often enough (which is true, they are 100% correct). But what can you do? DH is a product of the UK ;)) 😍

And it would sound so lovely with the name of DD.

Oh well, I really hope we start trying again after Christmas..

Btw, I don't dislike Karen or Tracey,

It's just not a name I'd give to my DD.

I'm a Gemma! I'm mid forties and it wasn't popular at all when I was a child, or now amongst my similar aged friends which I do like. My mum saw a programme with Gemma Jones in (who played Bridget Jones' mum) when she was pregnant and that where she got it from. I like my name, and like another poster said when someone calls you 'Gem' it feels like a term of endearment rather than just shortening!

1horatio · 17/12/2016 13:18

I do think it is a term of endearment. Or at least semi-endearment. You wouldn't call somebody you dislike Gem, right?
But you may still call somebody you dislike Annie instead of Annabelle or something.

I love it it! But personally prefer the spelling Jemma, but dh vetoed it.

1horatio · 17/12/2016 13:47

It's just not the same name with a J.

With a J it's more like Jenna. Not like a gemstone...

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 17/12/2016 13:53

It's a bit dull and dated. I know quite a sophisticated American with a Gemma though so maybe it's more popular there.

JasperPotato · 17/12/2016 14:04

My nonno had a dog called Gemma. It's always going to be a name for a dog to me. Like Tara and Tammy.

1horatio · 17/12/2016 14:06

Tammy really is a dog name, isn't it? One of the reason I wouldn't go with Tamsin and chose Thomasina instead.

My nonna used to have dogs as well. None of them were called Gemma, luckily 😂

I like it. And actually don't know many.

Jemma reminds me of Jem and the Holograms, so I wouldn't mind that either.

GettingitwrongHauntingatnight · 17/12/2016 14:14

I love it.

Biscuitsneeded · 17/12/2016 14:15

I think it's really nice. I'm an early 70s baby so only grew up with one Gemma (who was clearly in the vanguard!) but she was very nice. I know a 40 something Gema who is Spanish and an 11 year-old girl who likes the fact that nobody else at school has her name. If you have another DD I think you should go for it.

Zhx3 · 17/12/2016 14:21

I've got a Gemma Smile. She's the only one in her school!

WAFFLEO · 17/12/2016 14:24

I'm a Gemma/Gem and I think it's a pretty great name! 😀 When I was at secondary school there was one Gemma who left the school the year after I started and then no more for the whole time I was there, but I know two others that are a bit older than me. I think a Gemma now would be one on her own amongst the more 'granny' names that have come back in.

1horatio · 17/12/2016 14:43

Yes,

Gemma it is.

I hope we can restart the baby making after Christmas 😉

If we have a boy he'll be Ignatius, Anton, Cedric or Clement.

Huh. I'm very happy with these choices. I feel like they'll all go great with the name of DD.

Wo-hooo😂 Merry Christmas 🎄 🎄🎄
