To wonder why Gemma is currently so unpopular? What do you think of the name?

I had to stay up yesterday evening and to keep me awake I started thinking about baby names for our 2nd child (I'm not pregnant yet, but depending on some developments we may start trying again after Christmas...).

Anyhow, I really like the name Gemma. It really works with my Italian heritage, the Italian part of the family could pronounce that one, it sounds lovely and I don't think there would be any issues with it in the UK (or am I wrong?).

So, do you like Gemma?

Uhm.

Disregard the last comment, maybe Blush

I'm just excited at having 'found' such a (imo) gorgeous name. 😊

I have a Gemma. She was born in the Eighties but it's still a beautiful name....and she is an absolute Gem. My beautiful Gem Gem.

Loulou2kent · 17/12/2016 15:09

Love Gemma! Smile

AMillionMilesFromThere · 17/12/2016 15:24

I've just put Hannah in (dd) and surprised at how it's fallen in popularity over the years.

Ah well, I love the name and so does she so all is well Wink

Op, I think Gemma is lovely name. Go for it.

1horatio · 17/12/2016 15:31

Yup!

And I think Clarissa and Gemma would be a cute pair of sisters. :)

Million

Hannah is gorgeous. Just the right amount of elaborate, feminine, strong... really beautiful.

Right? Now we'll 'just' need the 2nd child 😂

Oh..
Clarissa and Gemma
Clarissa and Thomasina
Clarissa and Cedric (hm... two Cs)
Clarissa and Anton
Clarissa and Clement (yet again two Cs)
Clarissa and Peregrine
Clarissa and Ignatius (I do love that name)

As you see, there are way too many gorgeous boy's name imo. If we do end up having a boy making a decision will be super complicated 😳

I'm a Gemma. I quite like my name and although it was very popular in the 80's (I'm 34), I think it's due a revival!

1horatio · 17/12/2016 18:23

Exactly!
Gemma and Clarissa. That sounds more Italian than we actually are 😂

(DH's Italian is... well, his Latin is atcually very good [needs it for his work] and he's good at picking up languages, so I think it's quite remarkable. But his pronunciation 😉)

Danielle is ok I guess.
But (I'm not trying to offend) I seriously dislike Kayleigh.

But then again, all the other responses have been positive.

And Clarissa and Gemma just sounds very 'sisterly' imo 😊

No, it's fine :)

I just don't like any of these names.

For DD We did seriously consider Miranda (can't. I wanted to use the nn Meera. Which sounded like Myra to DH. Which... yeah. No way). I also liked Louisa (just a bit too boring and prim and proper), and Lilia/Lilja.

I currently like Josephine but really dislike the nn Josie.
Charlotte/Charlie is cute but very popular.
I do like Kira (feminine version of Cyrus).
I love Thomasina. But DF's name is Thomas. And he detests the notion of naming children after relatives.

And I really like Gemma.:)

Diving - I'm also named after Gemma Jones (and Gemma Craven) Grin yes it was very popular in the 80s; I was one of three Gemmas in my class, but I think as a name it has stood the test of time. Nowadays at work I'm the only Gemma, which makes life easier

FizzBombBathTime · 17/12/2016 20:15

I'm Jemma

(Jemma Louise)

Go for it op!

1horatio · 17/12/2016 20:35

Yup.

Unless an other spectacular name pops up (or DC is a boy) we may very well have a Clarissa and a Gemma,

There are just sooo many boy's names I love whereas girl's names are so much more difficult imo.

OP posts:
Sugarpiehoneyeye · 17/12/2016 20:35

I love the name, but written as Jemma.

1horatio · 17/12/2016 20:43

No offence to any Jemma, but it just isn't the same name as Gemma imo.

It reminds me of Jenna or a slightly misspelled version of Gemma. Or a mashup of these two names.

Not saying they are and I don't dislike Jemma, I just really like Gemma, whereas Jemma is 'just' pretty imo.

OP posts:
FizzBombBathTime · 17/12/2016 23:23

horatio that has actually made me feel good! No one has ever said I have a pretty name before 🤗

Fabellini · 17/12/2016 23:27

I only know one Gemma. Unfortunately she's a right old cowbag, so it has a negative association for me!
However, if I try and think of it separately, then I do quite like it just as a name Grin

Pluto30 · 18/12/2016 01:34

I don't like Gemma. It's outdated. Not out of use long enough for it to be ready to make a comeback, IMO.

MangosteenSoda · 18/12/2016 01:50

Good Gemma associations for me. The ones I know are clever, kind and cool!

And I think it is a classic name. Gemma Donati, wife of Dante, I'm sure that must be good pedigree!

septembersunshine · 18/12/2016 07:17

I know a Jemma but not with a G. I know two Jemimas though... (maybe that is the new Gemma?)

bathTime
DD nearly became Louisa. So. Seeing as I'm here asking about Gemma I think it's safe to say that I really like your name 😊
Fabellini 😂😂

mangosteen right? I mentioned that above as well. It does seem quite classical to me personally.

september Jemima is pretty. But 'too biblical' imo.

Navy I don't like it with a J. It's just not the same name.... I do like Antonia (and it has none of the issues of the other names I like, like nicknames I dislike, family members etc). But Gemma is just so much prettier imo. 😊

OP posts:
1horatio · 18/12/2016 08:55

And seeing as the name Gemma isn't offensive or has any unsavoury associations...
