Emmeline or Romilly?

[peeks head nervously round the door] Hello! I'm Isby and I'm new to Mumsnet. I'm expecting two bundles of joy. A little boy and a little girl! We have three children already. My oldest's first name is the same as the patroness of Paris and her middle name is the birthstone of October, which coincidentally enough is why I chose it! My only son (so far!) has the same first name as Roosevelt and his middle name is a family name, that is the same as an organ in the human body without a letter in it. And my beautiful youngest, has a name that means 'free man' and her middle name is the known name of the creator of Peter Rabbit. Get their names and I'll tell you what we call them in everyday time.

Anyway, if you don't want to play my name, here's the real purpose of this thread. I want to name my son Abraham Jude. His middle name is his dad's middle name. He will be known as Abe or Bram.
Our daughter's name is what we are struggling on! If we name her Emmeline, she will be Emmeline Olive and if we name her Romilly, she will be Romilly Juliet. Olive is a variation of my middle name but I don't quite love it. Emmeline would be pronounced Emma-leen. She would be known as Emmy and Romilly would be Romy/Millie. I'm worried that Emmeline will fade in to the background of Emily, Emilia, Emma etc. On the other hand, Romilly is so beautiful but I worry that it was originally a male name and is too different. Which would you pick? For Abraham's twin.

I really like Romilly, nn Romy.

I do like Emmeline too but not so keen on potential nicknames.

SellFridges · 15/12/2016 09:31

I have a Romilly. Genevieve was also on our list. Love your names.

Elbi · 15/12/2016 09:58

Romilly is lovely. I wonder if Emmeline is so associated with Pankhurst (legend though she was) that it would be hard for it to become simply your daughter's name without people always making the link.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 15/12/2016 10:17

Emmeline is beautiful.

llangennith · 15/12/2016 10:24

Emmaline is lovely and so is Emmy.
Romilly is a male name and its abbreviated form isn't nice.

Raines100 · 15/12/2016 10:42

Not a Romilly fan, but I love Emmeline.

Jigglealltheway · 16/12/2016 22:38

Romilly. I prefer Emmeline produced " Emma-line."

1horatio · 16/12/2016 23:05

Emmeline is much nicer.

I really like your other children's names.

sj257 · 16/12/2016 23:38

I prefer Emmeline. I don't like Romilly with Juliet either sounds too much like Romeo and Juliet (sorry!)

JaniceBattersby · 17/12/2016 23:25

Is there a 'correct' (i.e. Traditional) way to pronounce Emmeline? I've always been unsure.

Kidnapped · 17/12/2016 23:27

Emmeline.

cushioncovers · 17/12/2016 23:36

Romilly definitely

CoraPirbright · 19/12/2016 18:13

Romilly is divine! My dd would have been called that had dh not vetoed. Emmeline rather reminds me of that bratty girl in the poem about her hands not being clean and going to see the Queen!!

Pleasemrstweedie · 19/12/2016 19:04

Another vote for Romilly.

Commander · 21/12/2016 20:31

Emmeline. My absolute favourite name, so beautiful and timeless. Not keen on Romilly but love Romy. Good luck Grin

Sophronia · 21/12/2016 21:52

Romilly makes me think of Rommel

Joinourclub · 21/12/2016 23:49

Your kids have names from a Jeeves and Wooster novel! I imagine them with cut glass accents, elegantly smoking a cigarette in a holder. "What Ho Gigi! Frankie, Teddy and I are off for a spot of tennis". Great names.

gillybeanz · 21/12/2016 23:53

They are both spot on, I don't think I've ever liked names more and have never heard of Romilly which just has the edge for me.
Romy is nice too, where as Em, Emmy or the likes could be short for so many names.

Buttercupsandaisies · 22/12/2016 11:25

Emmeline goes much better - dislike romilly - not pretty enough for me

helenbryce · 03/06/2017 14:02

Late to the party here but I have an Emmeline (Saoirse Margaret) and if we were going to have another Romilly would be top of the list (after the wonderful vet who looked after my dog when he became ill) I love the name Emmeline, it's unusual enough that she won't be one of 5 Emmelines in her school year but it is still recognisably an actual name. And you can shorten it to Emmy or Em (although I actually don't although my parents do!!) You will have almost everyone hearing it as Emily though...

daisypond · 03/06/2017 14:42

I like them both very much. Emmeline has the edge for me. I know people called both Emmeline (in her 20s) and Romilly (in her 40s).

Montsti · 04/06/2017 12:31

Emmeline is much nicer IMO...and goes better with your other DCs names...

CarlottaJo · 04/06/2017 13:41

I know the most wonderful Romilly! Love her name, definitely gets my vote x

Rockaby · 04/06/2017 13:43

I prefer Emmeline. I think either choice would go well with your other names.

StarOnTheTree · 04/06/2017 13:47

Emmeline
