Malcolm?

My DP and I expecting our first DS in January. We both like the name Malcolm, but when we mention it to people we get quite indifferent reactions (and after a drink or two they try to convince us otherwise). Is it really that bad? Kenn to know more people's thoughts.

I like Malcolm. I think it's a nice name.

It's a bit Ian and Kevin to me but on the plus side he'd almost certainly be the only one in his school.

Tip - don't ever mention what you are planning on calling your child in rl. Even if it was something as bog standard as James someone will roll their eyes

I grew up next door to a kid called Malcolm. He's the only one my age I've ever met (early 40s). I quite like it as a name.

I've met a couple of baby Malcolm's. I do think it is a bit of a middle aged name, but I like Mal for short.

I'm not keen. It's very dull and dated.

How about Malachi as an alternative

There's no chance of him being the middle child so I think its OK!

Yes, it's really that bad in my opinion. It's of the same ilk as Ken, Geoff and Colin.

I wanted to call one of our male guinea-pigs Malcolm but DD vetoed it..... does that suggest its not even suitable for a rodent: not suitable for your DS

And he'll get called Malcolm Powder.
Malcolm puts my right into "Watching" with poor downtrodden Malolm.

My Grandad is Malcolm. Everyone calls him Malc but my elderly neighbour also Malcolm is called Colum for short.

It's an old fashioned name but not offensive most people know an elderly gentleman called Malcolm.

Lovely name, go for it. I've got three quite old-fashioned names and people were quite rude about the youngests. That only made us more determined and it suits him down to the ground. Don't ask others what they think, go with what you want!

What Auld and Odins said. I knew a Malcolm called Mac for short. Probably 60+ now.

I think it's really underused actually. I think of it as similar to Robert and Alister.

If you like it then go for it, just make sure that you get him a McLaren pram.

I like it. There are about a dozen a year born in Scotland; it dropped in popularity in the 1980s and hasn't picked up (yet!)

Really awful and old fashioned. I only know one in his 80s.

I like Malcolm pronounced with the Maaa version.

I like it. It's an underused solid Scottish name like Duncan, Innes, Skene etc.

a) whether you're from SW England
b) how posh you are
