Malcolm?

My DP and I expecting our first DS in January. We both like the name Malcolm, but when we mention it to people we get quite indifferent reactions (and after a drink or two they try to convince us otherwise). Is it really that bad? Kenn to know more people's thoughts.

I really don't like it, it's very dated and does not conjure up an image of a cute baby, or child for that matter! Sorry OP, I don't mean to be rude!

DramaAlpaca · 03/12/2016 18:25

Like others I find it very dated, and it's not to my taste.

But if you and your DH like it, that's all that matters.

Vixxfacee · 03/12/2016 18:26

Awful

BusterGonad · 03/12/2016 18:28

I don't like it, sorry OP, but he'll be your son not mine so go with what you like.

PabloEscobarReallyLovesHisKids · 03/12/2016 18:31

I love it.
I love Malcolm in the middle so maybe because it reminds me of that.

Quizmaster · 03/12/2016 18:57

Thanks for all the replies. He will have a Scottish dad so wanted a Scottish name but we live in London so worried it is just considered an old man name.

It's DS2s middle name, I like it, obviously. In Glasgow, to Malky someone is to headbutt them.

Sophronia · 03/12/2016 19:48

I like it

n0ne · 03/12/2016 20:13

I love it. Really manly.

Pluto30 · 03/12/2016 20:24

I like it, but does get shortened to Malc.

Also, have been guilty of referring to Malcolm Turnbull as Malcolm Powder.

iisme · 03/12/2016 20:28

He definitely wouldn't be the only one at my kids' school, there are several (Scotland). If you want Scottish but more mainstream you could for Calum, which is a related name.

stripeyreds0cks · 03/12/2016 20:49

I know a ten year old Malcolm. I really like the name, unusual but one everyone knows and spell

ChocolateForAll · 03/12/2016 21:13

Well, someone has to be the first to bring a name back in to fashion!

Good strong name, if you both like it then go with it. It's best not to tell people your name choice pre-birth in my opinion, you'll always get some negative responses whereas if you just introduce the baby with his/her name, people tend to be more polite.

Oysterbabe · 04/12/2016 13:47

I don't like it. I think it's dated but not in a good way.

rainbow99 · 04/12/2016 22:58

I would class it as an old man name, and not in a good way I'm afraid - sorry

Ankleswingers · 04/12/2016 23:07

No there are a million better names out there than this.

JessieDoops · 04/12/2016 23:22

I personally don't like it, but if it's what you like, go for it. It's not the worst name I've heard on here

AllPartOfThePlan · 04/12/2016 23:27

To me it's a 70s middle aged moustached man's name, but maybe that's because my uncle Malcolm was a moustached middle aged man in the 70s!! 😂 As someone else said it's a bit Kevin. I can't imagine a baby or toddler or child Malcolm, but an adult would be fine. Maybe he'd be a chartered accountant or a financial advisor.

ScarletSienna · 04/12/2016 23:29

I think it is pretty awful; I don't like many of the old man names (Arthur, Stanley etc) but this is even less appealing. It sounds so dreary and sluggish.

BipBippadotta · 06/12/2016 17:19

I like Malcolm!

ChristmasSeacow · 06/12/2016 19:17

I quite like it. But then I've only know one Malcolm well (now about 60) and he is lovely, erudite and funny. So only good associations here!

Pemba · 06/12/2016 19:24

*How would you pronounce it OP?

Maaalcolm or Mawlcolm?*

I don't get this? What do you mean? Isn't Malcolm pronounced with a short 'a'. ie to rhyme with talcum?
