Love the name Ezra but Dh insists it sounds like a girls name and has told everyone this to which we've received many negative comments and agreement that it sounds like a girls name!

This has put me off a lot but I do keep coming back to it!

Do you think it sounds like a girls name?? (have read it is in Turkey).

Is it really that unusual, do you know any in real life? I don't really want an unusual name, it's just that I like this one!

Do you think it will increase in popularity? It's 127 in the 2015 charts, my other children's names are around 15-20.

Driving myself crazy thinking about names and mot sure it's worth trying to convince Dh is I'm not brave enough to use it!

I love it, if dd2 had been a boy she was either going to be Ezra or Elias .

PotOfYoghurt · 02/12/2016 09:31

It's getting more popular. I know a little baby girl called it, and she gets called Ezzie as well. I assumed she was a boy though when I met her, as it's a boys name.

  1. It's absolutely a boy's name, no question about that.
  1. It's an AWESOME name. If our future second DC turns out to be a DS, he will be either Ezra or Caspar.
  1. I don't think you even need to be that brave to use it. It has been rising in popularity very sharply over the last few years, and I would bet a LOT of money on it being in the top 100 for 2016. Old Testament names are very cool right now, and Ezra is one of the coolest! I'm surprised it's taken this long to catch on, but it's definitely going to become a fixture in the top 100 (probably top 50) over the coming years.

I love the name. It's my son's name!

No one has heard it and thought he was a girl though. I agree, it is getting more popular, we have encountered one more Ezra at a baby group.

Fauchelevent · 02/12/2016 10:09

The actor Ezra Miller is pretty cool, as is the lead singer of Vampire Weekend.

Very much a boys name to my mind, like Mattia, Luca etc

BertrandRussell · 02/12/2016 10:10

If you have to ask yourself whether you're brave enough, don't do it.

I have no idea whether any bravery will be required, but if there is, it won't you who needs to display it!

AugustRose · 02/12/2016 10:14

I really like it and would never consider it a girls name.

cousinella · 02/12/2016 10:17

I know one woman (old family friend) in the States who is called Ezra.

cousinella · 02/12/2016 10:18

The woman isn't old, she is a young woman in her 20s.

Loafingaround · 02/12/2016 10:45

Its fab, be brave. Better to have boring people not like a cool/different/unusual name than chose a boring name thats just meh and only liked by boring people...if you catch my drift.

Ezra is a new entry in the 2016 charts at no.73...thats a good position imo- shows other people like it enough but its not everywhere.

Just so long as you're absolutely sure your child will feel the same. I would rather not make decisions requiring another person's bravery without their consent, personally but, as Mumsnetters say, perhaps that's just me.........

wigglesrock · 02/12/2016 12:04

I quite like it, I'd always think of it as a boys name. I know 3 born this year all to hipsterish parents - sort of this years Arthur/Milo/Arlo/Stanley.

BonesyBones · 02/12/2016 12:17

I love it, but DP has said no for baby due in a few weeks Sad both of my sons names came into the top ten about two years after they were born so I think I'm pretty good at spotting the ones that will become popular but aren't overused at the time.

KlingybunFistelvase · 02/12/2016 13:03

I love it!

I don't think it's particularly out there or unusual. It's becoming quite popular so I don't think there's much chance of people of his own age mistaking it for a girls name as they will probably already know a boy with one iyswim.

HouseworkIsASin10 · 02/12/2016 15:10

It's fab, and I don't know any at all.

Mummamia14 · 02/12/2016 22:20

Go for it! We are planning to use it if our baby due next month is a boy. We are Christians and already have a son with a more unusual Old testament name. But as others have said, names like Noah, Elijah, Isaac are becoming more mainstream and recognised now so it isn't that crazy!

Theimpossiblegirl · 02/12/2016 22:27

It makes me thing of Ezra from Pretty Little Liars and the singer Geroge Ezra, which could be why it's becoming more popular. It's a great name though, definitely more for boys.

Andbabymakesthree · 02/12/2016 22:28

It's becoming really popular which is why it's now off our list

Mondegreens · 02/12/2016 22:31

It's not all that uncommon in my experience, clearly male, and pretty cool into the bargain.

Sweets101 · 02/12/2016 22:34

Definitely a boys name and well known. Personally I like it. But if your DH really doesn't I think your on to a non starter. Best to put your thinking cap on.

WelliesAndPyjamas · 02/12/2016 22:40

I know two female Ezras. And the 'a' at the end makes it feminine, to me.
Sorry!
Nice name though.

10Betty10 · 05/12/2016 18:19

Ezra is listed as most popular up and coming name of 2016. So might be worth bearing in mind! (I have a common name- always having several of you in a class gets really irritating!)

GreatFuckability · 05/12/2016 18:56

i know 2 ezra's. I think its a great name.

MrsGsnow18 · 05/12/2016 18:58

I think most people would know it as a boy's name. It's becoming really popular, I know 2 born this year and have heard of s few others. I'm pretty sure I saw it on one of the top/most popular name lists recently too!

MrsGsnow18 · 05/12/2016 19:01

Most popular boy's name of 2016 so far
