Ok so my sister is supposed to be naming her daughter EE-la, not eye-la, and is getting very angsty with me for being utterly confused about how to spell it.

So, my question is how would you spell a name pronounced ee-la?

I'll let you know how she's spelling it after.

TeaBelle · 22/11/2016 16:21

Eelah
Aiolah

PotteringAlong · 22/11/2016 16:21

Noooo! Real was an auto correct Grin

I'd spell it Eela

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 22/11/2016 16:23

Eilah?

PurpleDaisies · 22/11/2016 16:23

Isla (although I'd normally pronounce that eye-la).

IncidentalAnarchist · 22/11/2016 16:24

ee-dash-la?!

ifigoup · 22/11/2016 16:24

Ila.

Twoevils · 22/11/2016 16:25

I'm guessing it's going to be Isla, though I would usually pronounce that Eye-la.

To get an Ee-la pronunciation I can only imagine Eela, Elah, Ela, Ilah??

IHeartKingThistle · 22/11/2016 16:26

My great aunt Ee-la was spelt Elia. But that's the West Country for you.

KlingybunFistelvase · 22/11/2016 16:31

Ila or maybe aoila

VixenLupin · 22/11/2016 16:31

Eylah.
Eilar.
Eeeeelaaaa.

FockerFun · 22/11/2016 16:32

Yla?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 22/11/2016 16:34

Eila (Like Sheila but without the SH)

QuimReaper · 22/11/2016 16:36

...why don't you just ask your sister how she intends to spell it?! Confused

PurpleDaisies · 22/11/2016 16:38

The op knows quim-she wants to she how we'd spell it then she'll tell us the answer afterwards.

peachypips · 22/11/2016 16:41

I get so irritated with people who don't read the OP properly and then make a totally boneheaded reply right under it.

Sorry OP Blush

BroomstickOfLove · 22/11/2016 16:56

Isla.

I'd pronounce it Eye-la the first time I saw it written down, but Ee-la after that. It's no more confusing than Caitlin or Francesca or Claudia which can also be pronounced in various ways.

Veterinari · 22/11/2016 17:00

Is we-la even a valid pronounciation? Isla is a tradional name with a well known pronounciation
I'' not aware of an EE-la variant?

ParisGellar · 22/11/2016 17:00

Eala.

Spam88 · 22/11/2016 17:02

I'm now intrigued as to what other pronunciation there is of Caitlin and Francesca...

Unicornsarelovely · 22/11/2016 17:08

I'd pronounce it 'eel-a' and Isla 'eye-la'

misamisa · 22/11/2016 17:09

Spam88 - bit ironic but said sister's name is Francesca pr Fran-ches-ca, but often at the dentist and suchlike it is pronounced fran-sess-ca or Fran-kes-ca... not that I've ever heard of them being "proper" pronunciations.

As for Caitlin, it's either Kate-lynn or Kat-lynn with Kat-lynn being the traditional one.
