Ok so my sister is supposed to be naming her daughter EE-la, not eye-la, and is getting very angsty with me for being utterly confused about how to spell it.

So, my question is how would you spell a name pronounced ee-la?

I'll let you know how she's spelling it after.

My middle name is Ela. It's pronounced Ella so not like that.

Caitlin (Kate-Lin or Catlin, Francheska or Fransesca

Yla?

PhilODox · 22/11/2016 17:13

In which language is "Isla" pronounced 'ee-la'?

strawberrypenguin · 22/11/2016 17:13

Eila I think. It's a hard sound to reproduce written down!

minipie · 22/11/2016 17:14

Aoila (like Aoife but with an L)

Or Isla - and she's chosen an "alternative" wrong pronunciation.

GazingAtStars · 22/11/2016 17:17

Yla

BroomstickOfLove · 22/11/2016 17:22

Caitlin might be Kathleen, Katleen, Kotchleen or Kate-linn.

I'd always assume Franchesca but I know a couple of Fransesscas.

I have taught a male Eyla before (pronounced eela). I wondered if it was an Arabic name, so googled and found that Eyla is also a girls name.

W8woman · 22/11/2016 17:46

Ila. I have a friend called this, and there is a beauty brand called this, so it can't be that unusual.

misamisa · 22/11/2016 19:23

She's spelling it Eila - like Sheila - for anyone that was interested. I personally would pronounce Eila the same as Isla - like Eileen - but I suppose I'll just have to get used to it and it'll seem natural soon enough!

It's probably the most sensible spelling from what you've all said though! Except perhaps Yla (I had a ski instructor once named Ylon that was pronounced EE-lon) but even that looks a little odd to me.

I guesses right. Grin

KlingybunFistelvase · 22/11/2016 19:49

Yeah Eila makes sense (like Sheila). I might say "is that Ee-la or Ay-la?" if I saw it written.

reallyanotherone · 22/11/2016 19:52

Anyone else got a war of the worlds earworm now?

Oooh-la!

KlingybunFistelvase · 22/11/2016 19:52

It's a pretty name. Congratulations on the new niece too! Smile

EweAreHere · 22/11/2016 19:55

Eila.

Really?

That poor girl will forever be correcting people.

BrollyXmas · 22/11/2016 20:08

Eila does look like it should be pronounced Isla

QuimReaper · 22/11/2016 20:46

If I saw "Eila" my first thought would be "Ay-la" and my second "Isla".

EVERYONE will assume "Ay-la".

CoffeeChocolateWine · 22/11/2016 20:52

I used to live with a girl who pronounced her name Ee-la and she spelt it Ela. What seemed quite strange to me to begin with became quite normal after a while.

PlumFairy2014 · 22/11/2016 20:58

Are you South West based?
There's Ela countess of Salisbury, which is pronounced Ee-la. A few people related to places or properties round here use it in their families.
Is your sister into her historical characters?!

PlumFairy2014 · 22/11/2016 21:11

Sorry Misanisa missed your last post... Blush

Gruffalosfriend · 23/11/2016 08:41

In many other languages Eila will be pronounced Eye-la. And Isla EEs-la like Isla Bonita.

I'd probably spell it Eela in English.

KlingybunFistelvase · 23/11/2016 08:44

From my googlings (so probably not terribly reliable) there is a Nordic name Eela which is unisex.

Well you will be the first of hundreds she encounters who will get spelling/pronunciation wrong. I'd just forget it if she's hell bent on creating problems for herself and her dd.
