NC because nobody irl knows I'm pregnant yet.

I love hippy and unusual names, but they need to work beyond childhood too.

I have a few that I love like ziggy and cobain and bluebell and chakra but I couldn't use them irl.

Please help.

Just chuckling at the idea that people would eliminate names because "you couldn't be a prime minister with that name". Its really not something I aspire to for my kids!

I work in a very traditional profession and there are plenty of people with unusual names. It doesn't seem to hold them back. In a multi cultural world we hardly expect to only deal with people called Tom and Jane anyway.

throwingpebbles · 07/11/2016 08:07

Unusual names I have heard and like

Liberty
Skye
Ophelia
Ziva

Hunter
Maverick
Dylan
River
Asher

TheCompanyOfCats · 07/11/2016 08:54

Exactly that LucyBabs Grin Wall to wall.

On another note, I love Desdemona blue

A very good test of a name is to stand at your front door and shout "X time for tea"......if you feel the slightest twinge of embarrassment or discomfort, then it's not a good choice.

Willow is nice, whereas Bluebell is just silly.

BertrandRussell · 07/11/2016 09:12

Another test is to imagine it's your name and think how it would sound coming from your boss, or from someone very much younger and junior to you. This eliminates several trendy boy's names- Sonny and Buddy come to mind.

HairsprayBabe · 07/11/2016 09:23

Eglantine
Lyrae
Lynx
Aquila
Altair
Atlas
Atalanta
Rowan
Wren
Clover
Lotus
Canyon
Gaia
Journey
Glenwood
Kodiak
Karma
Leith
Tawny
Thorn
Terra
Oak
Ash
Alchemy
Sonnet
Whisper
Halcyon

Floggingmolly · 07/11/2016 09:26

You're joking of course, Hairspray?

HairsprayBabe · 07/11/2016 09:37

Not at all, I know several children with each of the above the above names at my local primary!

They aren't all awful, Ash, Wren and Rowan are fine IMO.

Getting a hankering to name my imaginary baby Halcyon Glenwood Canyon now though!

devilinmyshoes · 07/11/2016 09:37

Wolf is an awesome name, I know one named after a living relative who was named after an ancestor born in the 1850s.

fitzbilly · 07/11/2016 11:53

Bertrand my boss is called Sonny. I think it's a perfectly normal, if uncommon, name.

Floggingmolly · 07/11/2016 13:06

My Dad was called Sonny. His actual name was James... Sonny is a nickname.

QueenLizIII · 07/11/2016 16:01

And at events / graduation etc.

eternally grateful to be Elizabeth.

dynevoran · 07/11/2016 17:24

plumsgalore maybe this is the big difference. We have so many nationalities and countries of decent in my eldest's class at school and so many names you are probably not surrounded by. We have no Tom or jack or George at all. So for us it totally fits in.

Plus Ezekiel is actually a traditional biblical name that he can use if he wishes. Ziggy is just a nickname that we love. Or he can use his Nigerian middle name which would no doubt also stand out where you live. That's not to say if I didn't live in a more homogenous place that I would have picked the same name, so agree it does depend on where your children will grow up. But regardless I would have chosen a Nigerian name to honour his heritage and that would always stand out outside of a multicultural area.

Asian feels like a step too far TBH

Manumission · 08/11/2016 10:06

ASLAN ffs Hmm

Artandco · 08/11/2016 10:17

What's wrong with Aslan?

It's an old Turkish name that happens to mean lion, hence cs Lewis using it in the book Narnia. But has been used for centuries before that. The character it has come to be known as is also a positive character depicting trust and loyalty.

BertrandRussell · 08/11/2016 10:22

There are countries where Jesus is a perfectly normal boy's name.

Doesn't mean it would be a good idea to use it for a British child!

viques · 08/11/2016 10:25

Zephyr would make me laugh uncontrolably, since it is the family name for a fart as it is defined as a warm breeze from the south.

Meant to put this on the family fart name thread but was distracted.......

Please don't lumber your child with a name that will not age well, I think every parent should be forced to look at pictures of 90 year olds and imagine them as their little babe being called River, Troutstream or Meadow Pippit. Some names are cute for babies, toddlers and even teens, but go off the boil rapidly after that.

Manumission · 08/11/2016 11:51

What Bert said.

Being called Aslan in a UK (or english-speaking) context would be awkward. In a UK school playground it would be hell.

Manumission · 08/11/2016 11:54

And yes of course he's a positive character; He's allegorical for Christ. Which is quite the nominative burden. Plus some bunch of squirts sooner or later would decide to tie Aslan to a bench with skipping ropes and 'sacrifice' him. Minefield, sorry.

MaisyPops · 16/11/2016 12:48

Asher, Willow, Rowan, Isla are all lovely.

There's some lovely unusual names that don't have to fit your hippy image.
But like other posters, OP I'd really question your desire to name the child with a unique hippy name as if they're an extension of yourself.
In schools I've seen all kinds of weird and wonderful names come and go. Sadly, I find it hard to imagine going to a lawyer called Queen or a doctor called Staar (yes, the 2 a was part of the unique spelling).

KlingybunFistelvase · 16/11/2016 14:53

What art said re Aslan. It's a beautiful name which has been around for much longer than the Chronicles of Narnia.

cmxx · 17/11/2016 22:06

I think Indie would be an adorable choice! :3

There's also Astrid, Fallon, Jadie, Boheme, Iantha, Lillith, Quinby, Ulalia or Xanthe for girls

For boys I can only think of Forrest, Atlas, Hunter, Oisin, Huckleberry, Elwood, and Gray
