NC because nobody irl knows I'm pregnant yet.

I love hippy and unusual names, but they need to work beyond childhood too.

I have a few that I love like ziggy and cobain and bluebell and chakra but I couldn't use them irl.

Please help.

halfapint being called Barack didn't hold back a certain US president and that is a pretty unusual name!!
Names are more diverse now. It's not a bad thing. Attitudes are changing.
OP I love names like River for a boy and Willow for a girl is gorgeous.
If you are worried give them a mainstream middle name they can use should they wish. I know a little Spike and he loves his name!

Halfapintofshandy · 06/11/2016 12:03

Halfa what a nasty thing to say. I really hope the next generation aren't as judgy as you.

hahahaha. I speak from personal experience; it's a curse to have a "hippy" "unusual" Peace/Love name.

The world is "judgy" dear heart.

There will never be a PM called Bluebell because - what actually happens - is if you have a name like "Fifi" or "Bluebell" people including teachers (sometimes subliminally I acccept) treat you in a certain way that they wouldn't treat a girl called Margaret or Theresa.

To become PM you need to become an MP. To become an MP you need to be elected. To become elected you need to be selected by a constituency. To be selected you have to pass the relevant party's selection board. Guess what? At EVERY FUCKING STAGE OF THAT PROCESS there are people who don't know you and will judge you at first impression on your name alone.

If your name is perceived to be hippy/floaty/not serious you ARE judged - not least because you are seen yourself as having poor judgment in not changing your name!! The starting point is that you aren't a serious person and you start on the back foot.

Astrid has been common in Scandinavian countries since the 19th century!

Halfapintofshandy · 06/11/2016 12:04

It's not about UNUSUAL; it's about "out there" and "hippy"! There are plenty of classical names that are unusual and uncommon but not hippy or daft or outthere.

Bravas · 06/11/2016 12:05

I know a Luna and a Zeke, fab names.

Helpmechooseababyname · 06/11/2016 12:07

Halfa I do really love out there and hippy names but I am very cautious that the name needs to work in adulthood too. The ones I listed in my op are names I love, but wouldn't use for that reason. I'm looking for a compromise.

Thank you everyone there are some truly beautiful names here Flowers

I like plenty of others.

pklme · 06/11/2016 12:23

Melody. Can be shortened to a very bland Mel, if necessary.

Children can change their names for political reasons if they want to. An unusual name is an advantage as it makes you stand out. no one has ever said 'which picklme', or 'picklme who?', I promise.

Sierra, India, Luna, so many options for girls, boys less so.

pklme · 06/11/2016 12:24

I like Wolf!

MadameSilva · 06/11/2016 12:26

Sigismund with Ziggy as a nn?

BratFarrarsPony · 06/11/2016 12:30

Please do not call your child Bluebell or Chakra, it is just awful. They are not 'unique' they just sound really wanky.

BratFarrarsPony · 06/11/2016 12:32

if you want 'hippyish and out there' names how about eg
Araminta - nn Mint or
Cressida nn Cress....:)

NapQueen · 06/11/2016 12:33

Heath and Fearn.

Floggingmolly · 06/11/2016 12:34

Wow, a doctor called Astrid Hmm. Astrid is not in the same stratosphere as some of the ridiculous suggestions here.

BratFarrarsPony · 06/11/2016 12:35

I know of Jonquil , Fushia, Scarlet, Clover, Jade, Freya, Fritha, Tabitha, Emerald, Zowie. They are all very successful in their chosen careers.

JamieVardysParty · 06/11/2016 12:42

I really love Soren and Stellan for boys at the moment, Indie for a girl.

originalmavis · 06/11/2016 12:42

Although my name isn't 'way out', unheard of or not a real people name, I had the piss taken mercilessly throughout school (nasty sexual references) and after many years of not, have recently had schoolboy sniggering when selling it out.

It's not a bloody joke. Wish I'd been called Mary. It sucks when you are 4 and dread introducing yourself of calling your name out in class.

Nickname your child Wheelbarrow or Deedlebit but please don't lumber them with a weird name.

W8woman · 06/11/2016 12:43

Summer, Rowan, India and Willow are mainstream these days.

I met a baby girl called Susan the other day - that's this generation's "out there" name.

StarOnTheTree · 06/11/2016 12:45

Lots of nice names on this thread. What about Liberty for a girl?

DerelictMyBalls · 06/11/2016 12:45

Just wanted to say that we live in a very multicultural part of London and most children in DS's school have unusual names... None of them bat an eyelid! DS himself has an uncommon name and not one of his schoolmates have remarked on it. You may find that children are far more accepting of individuality than the unpleasant person upthread.

DerelictMyBalls · 06/11/2016 12:46

Oh, and just to add that I have a 'Top 10' name and was bullied mercilessly in years 8-10.

Don't hold back from using unusual names just because of a judgmental few.

SundayGirl86 · 06/11/2016 12:48

Seren for a girl (as mentioned above). It means 'star' in Welsh so you have the hippy vibe and a beautiful name which will work in any context.
