NC because nobody irl knows I'm pregnant yet.

I love hippy and unusual names, but they need to work beyond childhood too.

I have a few that I love like ziggy and cobain and bluebell and chakra but I couldn't use them irl.

Please help.

I know a Storm. She is indeed a 10 year old hippy! The coolest and most popular kid in dd's school.

I prefer your sort of names to more common Kayden/Jayden type names or strange spellings of normal names.

I love Rowan, Willow, Fern, Blossom.
I adore Primrose (Prim) from The Hunger Games films.
Don't like Wolf or Chakra much though!

Where I live, everybody has an 'out there' name and nobody suffers for it. If it's along the lines of most of the suggestions on this thread it will generally signal good breeding (sorry, too tired to think of a less loaded way to put it) and that the child's parents are educated. I'd rather that than a top 10 boring, bland name. Just a word of caution: steer away from piss-takey hippy names like 'Rainbow' and 'Moonbeam'. If you go there, you've gone too far!

TheCompanyOfCats · 07/11/2016 00:50

Love Orion, Stellan, Astra, Wolf, Boheme and Seraphina from the lists above

QueenLizIII · 07/11/2016 01:03

I know a Banquo. Not a very positive choice of Shakespearean name though.

Also know an Orson and a Ptolomey.

Maybe go for rare rather than "hippy". Someone suggested Araminta and Cressida for girls. Both lovely choices.

LucyBabs · 07/11/2016 01:10

Coz you're all arseholes thecompany ? Grin

dynevoran · 07/11/2016 01:27

I have a ziggy. Full name Ezekiel. Live in London. It's really no big deal at all!

Middle name Omosola. Also no big deal to have what in the UK is an unusual name. There are so many different cultures where we live noone bats an eyelid.

joellevandyne · 07/11/2016 03:13

Reed
Dove (my country had a famous mayor with this name, so 100 percent politics-approved)
Aspen
Denver
Wren
Emery

Added bonus, all are unisex.

RickOShay · 07/11/2016 06:59

I actually do like Star as a name. Some of these names are just lovely, what's on your list op?Grin

NicknameUsed · 07/11/2016 07:18

"The Sensational Alex Harvey Band version of the song, Imperial. I'm that old, me."

So am I. I saw them perform live many moons ago. It was one of the best gigs I ever went to Grin

My only thoughts are to not have a name that is too difficult to spell.

I have a very unusual name that I hated when I was growing up. I was constantly teased about it, but that was in the days of most girls being called Julie, Debbie, Susan, Sandra etc. It is only four letters long, but no-one could spell it FGS.

I still don't like my name, but I am the only one where I work with that name (the company I work for has over 1000 employees), so it is easy to find me on the work email list.

Most of the names listed are fine. Don't use Bluebell if your surname is Wood as there is a children's hospice called Bluebell Wood and that would just have sad connotations.

CrepeDeChineWag · 07/11/2016 07:20

Zac sounds 'out there' but totally 'normal' too these days

BratFarrarsPony · 07/11/2016 07:22

I dont think Zac sounds 'out there' at all it just sounds dated and try hard. Maybe it was 'out there' c.1975

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 07/11/2016 07:26

Zac is in no way 'out there'

PlumsGalore · 07/11/2016 07:26

DS had a Ziggy at school, his name sounded ridiculous amongst the Jack, George and Toms. Everyone knew who he was and he couldn't have blended in with crowd if he tried. He was never bullied because of his name, just didn't have a chance of being inconspicuous, even if wanted to.

No point bringing up the fact that in the USA they have many more 'unusual' names. Every country has its own type of names and what would be considered normal here would be weird in e.g. China and vice versa.
Call you child what you like but make sure you add a couple of more normal names for when they decide they are fed up with having a weird name.
We have a 'Princess' in our local primaryHmm
