NC because nobody irl knows I'm pregnant yet.

I love hippy and unusual names, but they need to work beyond childhood too.

I have a few that I love like ziggy and cobain and bluebell and chakra but I couldn't use them irl.

Please help.

Maybe Herbert, Spencer, Augustus or Clement for your little future Prime Minister Grin? Winston I think is a bit 'out there'.

DerelictMyBalls · 06/11/2016 14:56

How about Oak for a boy? A good, solid name!

Willow or Fern for a girl.

Helpmechooseababyname · 06/11/2016 14:57

Haha I'm not sure I'll be encouraging my child to go into politics whatever name I choose Grin

I love Clement.

I've got loads of ideas from this thread so far thank you so much.

Fwiw halfa I have a ridiculously boring and common name and I hate it too.

I have names that I love and wouldnt use, then names i love that I would choose, I'm really not going to call my baby something ridiculous crosses peekaboo off the list Grin

I love the name Astrid for a girl. Not sure whether it's hippyish but it's certainly unusual.
Wish I'd thought of it before I had dd tbh.

DelphiniumBlue · 06/11/2016 15:07

I think there are lots of possibilities for girls - I like Sorrel, Juniper and Genevieve, all of which would work OK for a serious professional - but its harder to come up with unusual boys names which aren't too whacky! My fave is Alaric ( sadly vetoed by DH).

roseteapot101 · 06/11/2016 15:17

my aunt is a hippy at heart she gardens and is very much for the environment her name is Sasha my other aunt who is similar is Jane .Real hippys dont really have names like that my dads name was Charles he was a true hippy lol and as a child of a hippy my name Josephine

what your looking for is now considered hipster its a name a hipster would call their child

ExcellentWorkThereMary · 06/11/2016 15:19

How about Tulip? Like Labour MP Tulip Siddiq.

BertrandRussell · 06/11/2016 15:20

Gideon is a perfectly normal Biblical name.

Herhighness · 06/11/2016 15:24

I knew a woman years ago named Storm, I've never forgotten it and think it's lovely.

Astrid isn't unusual. Neither is Rowan or Willow

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 06/11/2016 15:31

Marley isn't either.

Mouthofmisery · 06/11/2016 15:34

I can't say I have ever judged anyone based on their name. Lovely individual names. Wish I had the guts!

carabos · 06/11/2016 15:38

Astrid, Rowan and India aren't remotely hippyish or "out there" Hmm.

NoncommittalToSparkleMotion · 06/11/2016 15:39

I had a prof named Sky. Kids will appreciate the Paw Patrol reference.

Valeriemalorie · 06/11/2016 15:40

Seraphina
Cicely
Posey
Lark

Keane
Gus
Zane
Ellis
Quinn

SuburbanRhonda · 06/11/2016 15:48

Please not Bowie.

It's beyond ridiculous.

eyebrowsonfleek · 06/11/2016 15:52

I think that our children are used to more variety in names so don't judge as much. There's a boy called Zeus in Reception at our school (not in London btw) and his classmates will obviously get used to that. When Victoria Beckham named her oldest Brooklyn I remember thinking WTF like the rest of us but it's grown on me.

While I think that you can go with almost any name, don't mess with the spelling.

I think it's hilarious how people view names differently. Plenty of professional Astrids in other European countries. Some people have clearly not travelled or met many people from other countries and backgrounds. (although I respect the opinion that people have on gut reaction)

I have just been served in a shop by an absolutely lovely young person called Meadow. She went out of her way to be helpful and it made me think that lovely names make lovely people.

LineyReborn · 06/11/2016 15:59

My favourite hippy mainstream name is Delilah

Kiwiinkits · 06/11/2016 16:05

I know a Zephyr. He's a great teenage boy, lovely manners. Parents very successful.

ZogsAnon · 06/11/2016 16:08

I'd have chosen Indiana if dp had agreed.

ImperialBlether · 06/11/2016 16:17

Why, Liney?

Grin
Valeriemalorie · 06/11/2016 16:30

I know a 5 year old Delilah, known as Dilly.

loveyogalovelife · 06/11/2016 16:34

Bluebell is a beautiful name, and I would be horrified if a child of mine became a politician Wink. I know a Willow and a Delilah, know as Lila and it's lovely. I agree that Jezebel is awful! Choose something that works for you - I can't think of anything worse than the same old same old boring name that is the same as everyone else's and people tend to grow into a name even if it feels unusual at first.

LineyReborn · 06/11/2016 16:38

The Sensational Alex Harvey Band version of the song, Imperial. I'm that old, me.
