Daughter is almost 10 months old... I don't know if I regret her name :(

I still love her name. However, it's very American... In the UK, no girls ever get named this. My mum hates it, but she soon got over it (but sometimes makes subtle digs)...

No one likes it (especially on here)...

I've had a few "oh, that's different! I quite like that!" Confused which I think was meant... However, I often get "oh, you don't really seem the type!" Blush which is just rude. Even HCPs seem to make digs - often constantly saying her name out loud (not when they're talking to her) like they're trying to understand why I named her it.

Like I say, I still love it, but I now feel awkward joining groups/clubs, as I know they'll judge her/me. It's only going to get worse when she joins school Sad

I don't know what to do.

never heard it, but it's hardly awful or offensive! i quite like it, tho i wouldn't pick it. my only thought would be 'that's unusual, i wonder where it came from'
i too assumed pronunciation same as caitlin, i'm surprised u feel that it receives such negative reactions.

DoloresVanCartier · 28/10/2016 16:56

I think it's a beautiful name

ShutTheFridgeUp · 28/10/2016 17:01

Not a name I've heard before, but I think it's really pretty.

SingaSong12 · 28/10/2016 17:05

Never heard of the name before. I'm neutral on it, but there's definitely nothing wrong with it. I wouldn't recognise it as being American. I might stumble over it a bit at first.
I might get it wrong thinking it was a first and middle name, but wouldn't once I got to know someone apart from my dreadful memory

If you both love the name ignore people making rude comments.

IloveCheese11 · 28/10/2016 17:07

I also think Gracelynn is pretty. A bit more unusual than Grace but not 'out there' by any means. I'm surprised that evokes a negative reactions tbh. But yes, you can easily shorten it to Grace and noone will bat an eyelid.

BummyMummy77 · 28/10/2016 17:07

I honestly like it. And I live in he states and have never heard it.

I wouldn't think another thing about it op. I was expecting something awful!

It's sweet, classy and pretty.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 28/10/2016 17:15

Another who really likes it. Yay. I bet all those who commented have kids called Isabelle and Oliver Wink It's a lovely name but people just like to judge (as I just demonstrated, judging boringness :))

NipSlipper · 28/10/2016 17:18

I've never heard Gracelynn before, but its very pretty. I like it a lot.

Stick to your guns. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this name!

BitOutOfPractice · 28/10/2016 17:18

OP I must admit I was braced for something really awful when I started reading this thread but I think it's rather lovely and not too out there at all. Don't regret it. It's lovely. And easily shortable (that's a real word!) if needs be

iwilldoit30 · 28/10/2016 17:24

Nothing wrong with the name at all!! I was thinking it was going to be something awful but actually I really rather like the name.

Burgatroyd · 28/10/2016 17:27

Have the courage of your convictions. I like it! Gracelyn is nicer than Grace in my opinion. Anything goes nowadays. I changed DD's name because old name sounded like another name and was tired of correcting people. Changing the name wasn't a right or wrong choice and no one batted an eyelid

notagiraffe · 28/10/2016 17:32

I like it. Never heard it before but love Grace and Gracelynn sounds like Evelyn which is an elegant name. It's pretty. It doesn't sound out of place in an English schoolyard. It's cute.

HardcoreLadyType · 28/10/2016 17:36

It's lovely.

I think you are being swayed by your mother's unkindness about her name.

I think you'll find that the other people's comments are simply because it's unfamiliar, not that they don't like it. Also, HCPs will be repeating if to ensure they get it right, and remember it, not to make a dig.

allegretto · 28/10/2016 17:39

It's a lovely name. Don't let anybody tell you otherwise.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 28/10/2016 18:37

She will be greatful in a few years that she isn't Olivia A. Olivia G. Emily D. or Emily H. Even if there is a Grace there is unlikely to be many of them and it isn't confused with other names like Emily, Emma, Emilia etc. Children like a name which uniquely identifies them. The only downside is that you won't find personalised tat with her full name. I tend to make stuff or order from ebay. I think it is a lovely name, unusual but not weird and fairly timeless. She has options to shorten it if she wants to and if your mother really wants to then you could give her permission to use Gracie as her nickname for her. If she likes Gracie better, or maybe it is just her stamping her feet because it isn't her place to name her. A few people were surprised by one of our dc's names but it is never mentioned now - it was just people whom we knew before.

albertcampionscat · 28/10/2016 18:40

Gracelynn is lovely.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/10/2016 18:45

It's a lovely name.

Veggiesupremeextracheese · 28/10/2016 18:50

I love it! It's a very pretty name, not horrible at all!

kiki22 · 28/10/2016 19:03

I grew up with my name being unusual people commented on it all the time about 6 years ago it made the top 20 or something and there are a whole bunch of little my names before then id only met 3 people in my life with it. Never bothered me infact I liked being different I've made an effort to give my kids unusual names.

I think your dd will be glad of it its not like its rainbowstar now that's a weird name.

ApocalypseNowt · 28/10/2016 19:04

My DD1 has an unusual name - not weird at all..you just don't see it used that much.

I get a lot of similar sort of comments but I genuinely take them as compliments. Maybe it's because I love the name so much &/or have the hide of a rhino...but if someone doesn't mean what they're saying or are actively trying to have a dig well that's their look out!

Fwiw I like Gracelynn Smile

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 28/10/2016 19:28

You're massively overthinking it OP.

I really dislike the choice I made for one of our DCs and this is 29 years later. I love the name itself, but it became far too popular and within a couple of years I wouldn't have chosen it over again.

However, it's a good name, a lovely name and suits them. More than that anyway is that once they started pre school, friends began to use nicknames, so the real name was only used in formal situations.

Etjls · 28/10/2016 19:31

My youngest has a name I can't put on here as it would identify us (it's not a made up word but never have I heard a child being called it) I had everyone try and tell me to pick something else etc and I ignored them and I love his name

hawaiibaby · 28/10/2016 19:37

I honestly said, 'Awe' when I read the name - Gracelynn is lovely! I really really like it. Don't let an old thread bother you and I bet 70% + of people who repeat it etc. are doing so in a positive way. I wouldn't change it. Use a nn sometimes if you like but you gave chosen a beautiful name for your daughter!

booellesmum · 28/10/2016 19:39

I am usually quite traditional when it comes to names, but Gracelynn is really nice. If you like it keep it.

hawaiibaby · 28/10/2016 19:40

Ps I sometimes regret my baby's name - he's 7m. Was quite a last minute decision and people have commented a few times that it's very posh or given me a funny look when I've used it (I may be slightly paranoid!).

It's Henry. I can't imagine him as anything else though and don't know what else we would have used but it does worry me sometimes. I love it, yet don't feel proud of it which makes me a bit sad. So I know where you are coming from.
