Daughter is almost 10 months old... I don't know if I regret her name :(

I still love her name. However, it's very American... In the UK, no girls ever get named this. My mum hates it, but she soon got over it (but sometimes makes subtle digs)...

No one likes it (especially on here)...

I've had a few "oh, that's different! I quite like that!" Confused which I think was meant... However, I often get "oh, you don't really seem the type!" Blush which is just rude. Even HCPs seem to make digs - often constantly saying her name out loud (not when they're talking to her) like they're trying to understand why I named her it.

Like I say, I still love it, but I now feel awkward joining groups/clubs, as I know they'll judge her/me. It's only going to get worse when she joins school Sad

I don't know what to do.

ooh snap Beez

JinkxMonsoon · 28/10/2016 16:23

If YOU love it, and your husband loves it, just have some strength in your convictions and screw what anyone else thinks.

Do you really want to look back in five years and regret shortening to Grace, just because you felt like other people didn't like it?

SatsukiKusakabe · 28/10/2016 16:23

Gracelynn is pretty. It is unusual though as a combination so you will get people repeating it and commenting on the novelty; it might not be meant unkindly. I love hearing what people have chosen for their babies.

I have an unusual name that people on here don't like, but never had anything negative from other adults and I like it Grin

She's got lots of options to shorten it if she really wanted to, but I doubt she will.

Didula13 · 28/10/2016 16:24

You can't please everybody and you shouldn't feel like you need to....if you and your husband like it then that all that matters.

DownWithThisSortaThing · 28/10/2016 16:24

I actually really like it OP, and it would be natural to shorten it as a NN to Grace which is a beautiful name on its own.
I wouldn't change it.

Cherylene · 28/10/2016 16:26

Gracelynn is lovely. Keep it as her name and just refer to her as Gracie when you are out and about. You don't have to give out her full birth certificate name to everyone, anyway Wink

mando12345 · 28/10/2016 16:29

Oh gosh that's lovely OP, not what I was expecting.

You could shorten it to Gracie if you wanted.
Please don't waste any more time worrying about it.

Unicorn1981 · 28/10/2016 16:29

I think it's nice. It sounds quite grown up and I can imagine people saying it a lot because it rolls off the tongue not because they are wondering why you used it.

Sleepybunny · 28/10/2016 16:30

Jesus I thought you were going to say something mental like Diamonte-LouLou.

Gracelynn is lovely! Don't change it!

PipersPiping · 28/10/2016 16:30

If you love it then stuff what others think!

stonygreysoil · 28/10/2016 16:32

I think the _ Lynn as a single name will always sound unusual/ very American to British ears, but its nothing to get too worked up over. As some have said, you can simply break it up on the birth cert, or else leave as is but go with Grace as a NN that will let your daughter fit in until such time as she can decide for herself.

JasmineS88 · 28/10/2016 16:33

Thank you so much Shock I'm really surprised! It gets comments because it is never used... It's popular in America though!

Gracelynn is a beautiful name. You have absolutely nothing to worry about there.

I honestly can't imagine what issue anyone would have with it.

EreniTheFrog · 28/10/2016 16:38

Nothing wrong with Gracelynn, honestly, I think it's gorgeous. I wanted to call one of my DDs Grace, but was put off by its popularity - wish I'd thought of it!

bessie84 · 28/10/2016 16:41

i love it! genuinely love it. bollox to what others think or say. very pretty indeed x

Iamthecatsmother · 28/10/2016 16:44

I think Graceynn is really lovely.

228agreenend · 28/10/2016 16:44

Pretty name. I wouldn't think it as American and would have presumed you combined two family names to get it.

You love it, your husband loves it, so that's all you need to consider.

stonygreysoil · 28/10/2016 16:45

i also suspect some confusion because the only name along those lines in Britain historically has been Jocelyn, which is pronounced quite differently [ joss eh lin]. So some people may genuinely wonder if its to be pronounced Grace Lin or Grass eh lin....

Levatrice · 28/10/2016 16:48

That name is lovely!! Keep it as is; dont change it for other people you will be resentful!

JasmineS88 · 28/10/2016 16:49

The funny thing is, no one has ever produced it wrong Grin people always assume Gracelynn, I think it would be different with Gracelyn (as that's more 1 name) but I think Gracelynn is obviously 2 names Smile

angstybaby · 28/10/2016 16:49

would you even be thinking this if it weren't for people making comments? Sod them, do what you think is right.

I have an unusual name. when i was a kid no-one could spell it or pronounce it but now I get told how lovely it is and i saw it on a mums net discussion about 'names you think are lovely' (or something along those lines). Names come in and out of fashion. twenty years from now it'll be charmingly unique.

i have the opposite problem: i worry that i've named my DC3 something which is becoming waaaay too common. i've already met 3 kids called the same thing.

if it helps, my parents called my brothers' names (obvs with their involvement!) when they were 8 and 10 (coincided with moving from london to the provinces) and it was fine.

Icapturethecast1e · 28/10/2016 16:50

Beautiful name would not change it if you like it. Wouldn't worry if people had problems with it, it's your child your choice.

Kew1234 · 28/10/2016 16:50

What a lovely name Smile it's really pretty. My DC name got more than a few raises eyebrows when he was little. Along came a footballer of the same name - it's incredibly popular now!

willitbe · 28/10/2016 16:50

As a health care worker, I would possibly stumble over whether it should be pronounced Gracie-Lynn or Grace-Lynn, and would possibly appear a little awkward at saying it, but I think it is a lovely name with either way. So perhaps this is what others are struggling with, and not that they think poorly of the name?

I tried shortening all my children's names later and failed, so if you are going to follow the suggestion of shortening it, then sooner rather than later is best! My children don't want me shortening their names now, even though I love the shortened versions and the longer versions are more of a mouthful in calling for them!

SpookyMooky · 28/10/2016 16:53

It's pretty, and I've never heard it before so it doesn't sound American to me. Maybe people say it a lot because it's harder to remember names you've never heard before. Stick with it, and then she can choose if she wants to shorten it later.
