Daughter is almost 10 months old... I don't know if I regret her name :(

I still love her name. However, it's very American... In the UK, no girls ever get named this. My mum hates it, but she soon got over it (but sometimes makes subtle digs)...

No one likes it (especially on here)...

I've had a few "oh, that's different! I quite like that!" Confused which I think was meant... However, I often get "oh, you don't really seem the type!" Blush which is just rude. Even HCPs seem to make digs - often constantly saying her name out loud (not when they're talking to her) like they're trying to understand why I named her it.

Like I say, I still love it, but I now feel awkward joining groups/clubs, as I know they'll judge her/me. It's only going to get worse when she joins school Sad

I don't know what to do.

I like it!

DanicaJones · 28/10/2016 16:06

I was expecting something awful but that's perfectly nice and i doubt anyone is judging it badly at all. Just saying it out loud as it's slightly unusual, but not in a bad way.
You tend to get extreme reactions on MN but I don't think people will be thinking that in real life.

ladydepp · 28/10/2016 16:07

I think it's really nice, just two syllables. Do you pronounce it like two names with emphasis on Grace or sort of run them together so it's a bit like Caitlin? (sorry if that doesn't make sense!)

OnceMoreIntoTheBleach · 28/10/2016 16:07

OP it's a gorgeous name Grin

Grace or Gracie for short, and when she's older, Gracelynn will be fabulous and unusual and special and will set her apart!

Think about the name Caitlin (various spellings, obvs).

It wasn't always popular, at some point it was unusual and new. But those with it can be Cate if they want, and Caitlin when it matters.

I love it Grin

jobrum · 28/10/2016 16:07

I was wondering if it was Gracelynn! I saw that name on here a while ago and said outloud its so pretty. It sounds like a whole name, and a lovely one. Good name choice op!

DanicaJones · 28/10/2016 16:07

I mean i don't think people will be reacting as they did on the thread you saw.

JasmineS88 · 28/10/2016 16:07

Thanks everyone. Really pleased with the responses. I sometimes call her Gracie, which I suppose is more 'normal' anyway!

NotYoda - I just wanted to talk about my feelings around her name/other people's views, etc. sorry?

I can't understand people who have the mental space to care about other people's children's names, and are rude enough to comment on them.

OP, you can use people's reactions to your chosen name to make a judgement about their character.

loobyloo1234 · 28/10/2016 16:09

I like it OP .... honestly? Screw what other people think. I don't think it's that unusual that you should worry Smile To be honest, I don't think many babies suit their name really ... she'll grow into it though i bet

jaykay34 · 28/10/2016 16:09

I actually love it ! I prefer it to Grace and Gracie (which there are loads of). Don't regret your choice OP, she will love it as she gets older.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 28/10/2016 16:09

Oh I thought it was going to be Tammy-Lee or something Grin.

Gracelynn is a pretty name and I don't think it will attract negative comments as she grows up. My children's names used to be quite liked on here, but lately they're hated! Don't over think it.

"A Rose would smell as sweet by any other name" (badly quoted Shakespeare but you get the idea.)

JasmineS88 · 28/10/2016 16:10

ladydepp - I say it like Caitlin, I suppose!

flowerpower668 · 28/10/2016 16:12

I love the name gracelynn, I am surprised to hear that you have had such negative opinions!

It's a beautiful feminine name and unique but in a good way :-)

I also love the name Gracie as a nickname!

SparkyBlue · 28/10/2016 16:14

That's a beautiful name

IminaPickle · 28/10/2016 16:16

It's a beautiful name as is Caitlin 😉
Style it out OP; as ILostit says names come in and out of favour, but it's just lovely.

NotYoda · 28/10/2016 16:16

OP

OK. Sorry I was blunt. I understand you wanted reassurance. I hope that you are reassured now Smile.

MrsLettuce · 28/10/2016 16:16

Gosh. I was expecting something really awful but Gracelynn is lovely. Really very nice. It is unusual but works a name, which is so often not the case with glued together names.

Keep it!

Gracie is a delightful nn but please don't feel you have to avoid using her full name. It's beautiful.

I think I'd repeat it if you told me. Not from shock or dislike but because it's not a name I've come across before and it feels nice in the mouth IYSWIM.

ClashCityRocker · 28/10/2016 16:17

Crikey op, that's a lovely name!

And easily enough shortened to grace or Gracie should she prefer that.

I really like that - it has a really classical feel to it (and passes the high court judge test that mners worry about so much!)

LetitiaCropleysCookbook · 28/10/2016 16:17

I think Gracelynn is a really lovely name. Unusual, but in a good way! I can't imagine anyone would think it was awful. What has given you the idea that it is not liked? I'm truly astonished.

TheProblemOfSusan · 28/10/2016 16:18

That's lovely! I wouldn't change that if you like it - what a bloody cheek of people to be making digs!

I can see what you mean about a bit American but I don't really see what difference that makes - there's lots of lovely American names. And lots of crap UK ones.

My only concern is that I wouldn't pronounce it properly through unfamiliarity, I'd probably say 'Grace-e-lynn' the first time, but that's hardly a thing to worry about, easily corrected.

herbwife · 28/10/2016 16:19

Nothing wrong with that.
There was a girl at ds's nursery called Cupcake. I thought it was a NN but apparently not.

botanically · 28/10/2016 16:20

If I met a Gracelynn I'd probably make a conscious effort to deliberately say it out loud more than I usually would with a name. At least at first. To 'get my mouth around it' if that makes sense. I'm not sure whether there should be a slight pause in the middle and if so, how slight.

That might be what people are doing when it seems like they're deliberately saying it. But coupled with your memory of the thread on here it's amounting to more in your mind.

It's a lovely name, and I imagine it was quite snobby people putting it down in that thread. Rude people always find a way - if you changed it a different group of rude people would probably find fault with her new name anyway.

Dontfencemein · 28/10/2016 16:21

It's a lovely name and as others have said, both Grace/Gracie and Lyn sound great. I would try shortening it informally now and if DD later wants to change her name, she can.

I thought you were going to say you'd called her something like Rose of Sharon (from The Grapes of Wrath, I think). Now that sounds American! Lovely too though.

Beeziekn33ze · 28/10/2016 16:21

OP - Gracelynn is fine! As for school, they will have had far more unusual names I'm sure. Don't worry about it.
As you say, you do sometimes shorten it to Grace yourself and maybe she will too. Some little girls do love to use their full names when people ask them what they are called though! 'My name is Bethany Arabella!'
I've never been quite sure how to pronounce Caitlin. I know it's usually 'Katelin' but as it's (I think) the Irish spelling of Kathleen, I wondered whether it should really be 'Kat'lin' if you see what I mean.🙃

FurryLittleTwerp · 28/10/2016 16:21

Gracelynn is a pretty name - had;t heard it before.

Much nicer than Caitlin which is actually supposed to be pronounced Kathleen, if you are Irish...
