Brogan - boys name or girls name?!

princesshaley · 27/10/2016 18:12

I've come across the name Brogan, which I like for a boy, but I've seen it used a lot for a girl, and I know a few girls with the names, but no boys.

Around when I was born, it was apparently a lot more popular for girls (165 girls vs 34 boys), but last year, it was much more popular for boys (58 boys vs 16 girls).

Should I add it to my boys list, even though the Brogans my age are girls? Or should I let it go? Confused

I've only ever met a female Brogan but I do think it's a rather masculine name

PoldarksBreeches · 27/10/2016 18:47

It's ugly either way, sorry

DerelictMyBalls · 27/10/2016 18:50

It sounds very similar to Began (the Aussie version of ch*v).

DerelictMyBalls · 27/10/2016 18:51

*Bogan

tonsiltennis · 27/10/2016 18:52

Neither. It's a surname.

Sophronia · 27/10/2016 19:02

The one I know is female

Aoibhe · 27/10/2016 19:08

It's a common surname in Ireland not helpful

SunnyInMay · 27/10/2016 19:20

I've only ever met one who was female.

Bertucci · 27/10/2016 19:22

It reminds me of the derogatory Australian term 'Bogan'.

TenThousandSpoons · 27/10/2016 19:23

I've met one girl called Brogan. How about Brody?

TroysMammy · 27/10/2016 19:24

I knew a female one. She must be about 23 now.

MrsGsnow18 · 27/10/2016 19:31

I have only ever encountered two female Brogans. (One is 5 or 6 now the other much older) I also know it as a surname.
It sounds masculine enough, but many people will perhaps associate with being a girl's name.

SimonLeBonOnAndOn · 27/10/2016 19:34

I'd say it was a male name, but I know a female one.
Can't stand it. Awful name.

Onlytimewilltell · 27/10/2016 19:40

I know one boy aged 9. I think it's lovely.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 27/10/2016 19:42

Either, but I don't like it, sorry.

LynetteScavo · 27/10/2016 19:42

I think it's more a boys name, because it reminds me of brogues. But girls can wear brogues tooGrin

MrsJayy · 27/10/2016 19:43

2 girls i know are Brogan it is 1 of those names you can unisex it isn't an ugly name whatever you decide

poppyknot · 27/10/2016 19:55

As a surname (Irish) I think it would be a legitimate boy's name and would work if you were Scottish If you needed a justification.

EssentialHummus · 27/10/2016 19:58

Neither, it's awful.

Pluto30 · 27/10/2016 20:18

Makes me think of bogan.

It's not even a particularly nice last name, let alone first name. I'd think it was a boy's name, not a girl's though.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 27/10/2016 20:23

Yep, sounds like Bogan. Or Bogey ( sorry ). Ugly either way.

hoddtastic · 27/10/2016 20:33

if you don't know what it is, and you want to use it then assume most people will feel likewise. It's not very nice for either sex though tbh.

hoddtastic · 27/10/2016 20:34

and i am someone who had Murphy on a shortlist for one of my kids.

SendARavenToRiverRun · 27/10/2016 20:53

I know a girl with the name. Not one of my favourite names ( and one of my girls has a surname first name)

Chinlo · 27/10/2016 21:33

People actually voluntarily use this as a name for their kids??
