Lourdas?

Hi all.
We're deciding on baby names and for a girl we were thinking of lourdas and would be Lou-lou for short.
It's our favourite place in the world a little island in kefalonia in Greece.
What do you think?!?!

Could be a bit of an unfortunate nickname at school, unfortunately. Could use it as a middle name though?

If you like Loulou as a nickname (which is very pretty), you could call her Louisa? Which is also very nice.

If you really want Lourdas because it's sentimental, use it as a middle name. You can get away with offbeat middle names a lot more easily.

Lou-Lou is all well and good but presumably your DD might not want to be called that at..say...35. So think carefully about the full name and how it would be pronounced and interviewed by non-Greek speakers. Eg could it look like a misspelling if Lourdes?

No, definitely not. Lourd(e) in french means heavy, clumsy, lardy. And it sounds like Lardass, as other PPs have said. If you want greek-influenced, there are so many beautiful greek names. Xanthe, Zoe, Penelope, etc etc etc.

Plus it's not a little island as far as I know, it's a place in Kefalonia

It's pronounced lourd-as so no not lard ass as its not spelt like that and I know it's not an island it's on the island of kefalonia.

I would just assume that you were a Madonna fan who couldn't spell.

As I read the name I also pronounced it Lard Arse in my head, you can't do that to a child.

It doesn't really matter how you pronounce it, it is a name that will be given unfortunate connotations by other people. Pointing that out is hardly rude.

Adults on this occasion will have nothing on kids in the meanness stakes. I speak from experience. Never underestimate the imaginations of the nastiest kids in the nickname department. It improves at senior school unless they stay with the same peer group in which case the nicknames are for life.
