Hi everyone,

I'm new here!

We have decided on Katy/Katie for our baby girl.

Which spelling? I think I prefer Katie, DH prefers Katy... Blush

Thanks everyone!!

My DD is katy and she loves it! There are lots of Katie's but only one Katy at her school. I think it looks more like a 'proper' name not just a nickname. But then I agree with everyone, there is never anything with her name on and she always has to spell it or correct people. Hmm

CEOD · 10/10/2016 20:49

ie, definitley!

Chinlo · 10/10/2016 20:53

Katie by a long way.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 10/10/2016 20:55

Katie

MitzyLeFrouf · 11/10/2016 10:14

Katy. Katie only suits the under 5s. Also,.....Katie Hopkins

I'm another advocate for full names; a Catherine can later choose to be Catherine, Cat, Kat, Cath, Kath, Cathy, Kathy, Katy, Katie, Cate, Kate, or whatever. I know on MN it's popular to say "but I don't want an Alfred, my son's name is Alfie, that's the name we've chosen and we're always going to call him so what's the point in having a longer name we're never going to use, people are so snobby and traditionalist" but I think it's nice to give your child the extra options that come with a traditional full names with a wide range of potential pet names or nicknames or family names. I also think it can be quite nice to choose to have different names for different things - Jessica at work can be Jess to her friends and Jessie to her parents, and the connotations and reflection of different types of relationships is kind of nice.

IcedVanillaLatte · 11/10/2016 10:33

I went to school with a Charlie, a Jaz and a Saf, but at work they get to be Charlotte, Jasmine and Sarah if they want.

SorenaJ · 11/10/2016 11:32

Katie

PotteringAlong · 11/10/2016 11:34

Katherine. Shorten it to Katie if you want but as a name by itself it's so childish.

maitaimojito · 11/10/2016 11:56

I prefer the look of Katie but as others have said it somehow seems like a name for a child rather than an adult.

Katy does seem more grown up as a stand alone name but I think she'd constantly be correcting the spelling.

I definitely prefer the shortened form but I think I would give the name Kathryn on the birth certificate just in case she reaches adulthood and would prefer a different or more adult form (as some of the previous posters seem to imply).

Having said that I think the different spellings of Kathryn/Katherine/Catherine/Cathryn would be annoying if it were my name. I have a name that has four variants and mine is the most common form which means most people spell it correctly. I do still get the odd person using one of the other forms.

Pigeonpair1 · 11/10/2016 11:59

I have a Katie - her full name is Katherine but she is always Katie!

IcedVanillaLatte · 11/10/2016 12:12

Don't forget Katharine and Catharine Maita! Grin

Pipilangstrumpf · 11/10/2016 14:15

Katie looks cute and childish imo. Katy seems more grow up.

But I'd prefer the full name on my bc. I prefer Katharina (kat-a-rina).

My dd is Alice Katy Grin

DeputyPecksBentBeak · 11/10/2016 18:56

And dragontrainer I see! Mine's in primary school so I think you win!

JRoo · 12/10/2016 18:30

Katy like What Katy Did as PP said... but short for Katharine - or Katherine!

Pigeonpost · 12/10/2016 18:52

Ha, I know too "I'm Katy with a y"'s. I still much prefer it to Katie though. Katie looks like it is short for Katherine whereas Katy seems like more of a standalone name. Mind you, both of the Katys I know have had stand up arguments with people who insist that their name must really be Katherine. It isn't in either case.

Boolovessulley · 14/10/2016 21:09

Katie although I prefer Catherine.

CoffeeCoffeeAndLotsOfIt · 14/10/2016 21:20

Katy could be like the What Katy Did books by Susan Coolidge.
Katie could be like Katie Bell from the Harry Potter books by JK Rowling...
(These things matter to me, even if it's a bit silly. We named DS after a book character.)

Loved both series, but name wise prefer Katie :)

kittylh · 16/10/2016 19:45

Okay so I'm biased here, but I prefer Katie. I actually feel like Katy looks more like a nickname than Katie...

Growing up I used to wish I'd been a Katy, but I prefer the ie now. I've never really felt like my name was childish though to be honest. I occasionally get called Kate, and I don't mind that either - I like that Katie can be shortened, so to me that feels like a full name.

Have been asked many times if it was short for Catherine/Katherine (no) and also many times if it was ie or y over the years. I've found very mixed results with those just writing and choosing the ie or y though.

talksensetome · 16/10/2016 19:54

Katie. I have a Katie Dawn.

MaryJPoppins · 16/10/2016 20:36

Most definitely Katy. It looks much nicer written down, has a lovely flow to it.
