Apparently the name Gary is dying out in the UK - but I love it! What are people's thoughts on the name?

I used to date a Garry which i wasnt keen on the spelling of.

No other thoughts on it really

JosephineMaynard · 02/10/2016 22:59

I think it's a bit dated, and not one I'd give to a baby born now.

But I wouldn't say it's going to die out. Give it 50 years or so, and it'll probably come back into fashion as a trendy grandad name.

Pinkgeek · 02/10/2016 23:00

Can't help but hear the guy from only fools and horses!

Wellywife · 02/10/2016 23:01

Sadly it's associated with Glitter nowadays. Just like Rodney is still a plonker

SallyR0se · 02/10/2016 23:01

Gary is a cool leather jacket-wearing older boyfriend from 1980s Jackie magazine. Suzie is worried about her friend Claire dating him, as they're still in school & Gary is a bit of a bad boy.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 02/10/2016 23:24

Well if you're looking for something different. Id say go for it. There won't be many Garys in the class room.
If you want something unusual go for something plain

Decanter · 02/10/2016 23:25

It's a great name.

Canny say it isnae.

I know of two little kids called Gary, both named after their dads. So it's not extinct yet!

NotNob · 02/10/2016 23:41

If someone introduced me to their baby, Gary, I would give an involuntary laugh.

Whathaveilost · 02/10/2016 23:44

I think it's ok.
Why not.

Out2pasture · 02/10/2016 23:56

hubby is a gary, and grandson just given it as a middle name :)

Ohdearducks · 02/10/2016 23:58

Just can't imagine a little baby called Gary.

CandyMcJingles · 02/10/2016 23:58

Apparently vegans are calling their cheese Gary.
I didn't make that up. It's a thing.

BackforGood · 03/10/2016 00:03

I like it - well overdue for a come back. FAR better than some of the ridiculous names I hear in Nurseries at the moment.

PoppyPicklesPenguin · 03/10/2016 00:07

Apparently vegans are campaigning for their cheese to be called Gary.

garden I heard this too

It's up there with Brian for me

Even DC pet spider was called Brian

But OP will your child be traumatised if you call him Gary, more than likely not

If you like to GO FOR IT

JosephineMaynard · 03/10/2016 00:13

OT, but why do vegans want to call their cheese Gary? Confused

CandyMcJingles · 03/10/2016 00:22

Vegan cheese is made of coconut so it's not cheese so it should be called something else. So it's Gary.

KoalaDownUnder · 03/10/2016 00:23

No. No no no. It's awful.

CoffeeCoffeeAndLotsOfIt · 03/10/2016 00:27

My dad is called Garry. I like it.

Prefer double R spelling too.

JosephineMaynard · 03/10/2016 00:27

I understand that it's not the same as standard cheese made from animal milk but it sounds a bit cannibalistic calling the vegan cheese Gary though.

Eating a Gary sandwich, Gary on toast, let's sprinkle a bit of grated Gary on the dinner.....

Why is Harry ridiculously popular but Gary so disliked. Harry and Gary sound practically the same....

I don't mind the name Gary. It's ok. At least it wouldn't be too common.

PoppyPicklesPenguin · 03/10/2016 01:00

I'm waiting for someone to say I love my Gary... dribbled with cheese

sonlypuppyfat · 03/10/2016 03:58

It's a proper blokes name, I went to school with loads of Garys
