I'd really like to name my baby due in 4 weeks Baxter.

I had an old friend who passed away a few years ago, and was like a grandad to me. Sadly he never had any grandchildren and would have loved them. I would like to have him remembered in this way.

The gentleman in question's surname was Baxter. He was a very cool man who had dragged himself up from poor East End beginnings to become very senior in his profession but would patiently sit and watch us little girls sing a new song or do a dance

Can't use his first name, as a) he hated it as it was misspelled by his dad when registering him, and b) it doesnt work at all with our surname.

However I know most people meeting our little boy wouldnt know all of this and would just know him as Baxter. Is it too unusual?

Yes, I agree, it's a lovely thing to do, but sounds much better as a middle name to honour your friend by.

I love the reason for your choice - I think Baxter works as a middle name not first. I think of soup and I don't personally like surnames used as first names.

Yes, as a middle name it would be great as that's the usual way to include a name which has personal significance but isn't suitable as a first name.

hmm, I initially thought of it as a middle name, but DH thought it might sound a bit like we were using my maiden name as a middle name (though that sounds nothing like Baxter)

Max Baxter (Max Factor???? definitely doesn't work!)

DH would also like a middle name of Jackson.

It just makes me think of the dog on Anchorman It'd be nice as a middle name

I think as a middle name it would be a lovely tribute, but yes as a first name it makes me think stuffing/soup/dog I'm afraid.

So if your DH likes Jackson, clearly surnames as first names are what you like, so I'd just go for it.

yeah i think we dont have an issue with surnames as first names.

Our surname is a very common first name for a girl, to the extent that when asked for my surname, when I give it I am often asked "yes, and your surname"

DH and I also have very common first names for when we were born almost but not quite Jack and Chloe and spent a lot of time being Chloe 1 and Chloe 2 etc, so hoping for something slightly more unusual.

Jackson Baxter sounds pretty cool!
I think it is a lovely reason to pick a name but I marginally prefer Jackson as a first name. All the other names you have listed work really well with Baxter as a middle name.

Our kids have 2 middle names - could you go with that?

Jackson and Baxter don't go together well but Jack Baxter sounds good

It makes me think of a beagle. I don't know if I've ever met a beagle called Baxter, but that's the association

Baxter is too much a dogs name to be a first name IMO - it would get shortened to Bax/Baxy?

However Jack Baxter XXX sounds v cool - you could always put Jackson on his birth certificate and shorten it.

I also thought of soup as soon as I read the name, sorry. It is a really lovely idea though OP and agree with others that it would be fab to use it as a middle name.

Baxter is one of the largest Pharma/medical goods companies in the world. All I can see are easy open applicators when I think of the name.!

Lovely idea for a middle name.

As a first name, it reminds me of the Countess of Grantham's lady's maid in Downton Abbey.
