Is Rhea too similar to Aria?

DD1 is called Aria. She's 3 and we love her name. When we were thinking of a name a lot of the girls names we liked were short and ended in an a (Eva & Cara were serious contenders)

Now DD2 is due (in December) and we're thinking of names again. A lot of names I like DH doesn't (Willow, Rowen). A few names he likes I'm not keen on (Emma, Emily).

I have a lost on my phone and last night I was putting Thea on it when my phone auto-corrected it to Rhea and we both liked it.

But is it too similar? Is the spelling correct as I'd pronounce it Ray-a, not ree-a.

Hello,
It does sound rather similar, yes. Enough to be confusing I would think.

As an aside, isn't a Rhea a kind of big bird?

gastropod · 08/09/2016 08:59

Sorry didn't mean to sound flippant! Meant to add that Rhea is nice in its own right, just very similar to your other daughters name.

stiffstink · 08/09/2016 09:00

It's like an emu.

stiffstink · 08/09/2016 09:01

Correction: more like an ostrich.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 08/09/2016 09:03

I think if you spell it Rhea (like the bird) people will pronounce it Ree-a (which is too similar to Aria IMO)

katemess12 · 08/09/2016 09:04

I'd pronounce it ree-ah, personally.

Either way, I do think it's too similar.

How about Wren? Similar vibe, nature name etc. But not similar to Aria (although both characters from PLL).

ageingrunner · 08/09/2016 09:05

Yes it's too similar. Also too much like rear

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 08/09/2016 09:06

Yes, too similar IMO.

But then I know of a pair of brothers called Jordan and Jaiden - so people do do it. But others judge.

What about Ciara?

idontlikealdi · 08/09/2016 09:07

Big bird. Not what I'd want to call my daughter. Robin maybe not Rhea!

Sophronia · 08/09/2016 09:10

It makes me think of the bird!

How about Raya?

perrita · 08/09/2016 09:11

I think the spelling seems wrong for how you want to pronounce it, why not spell it Raya instead? I don't think they would be too similar then and the pronounciation would be more clear.

Caipora · 08/09/2016 09:11

Wasn't Rhea the mother of Zeus?

It's Ree-a though. Raya would be a better spelling for the name you like.

Even then it's similar to Aria.

Peopleplease · 08/09/2016 09:13

I was afraid it was too similar.

DH doesn't like nature names - well he doesn't like names that are the name of something else so tree names and bird names (except for Rhea!)

katemess what's PLL?

GinAndOnIt · 08/09/2016 09:15

Aria and Thea sounds lovely.

katemess12 · 08/09/2016 10:48

PLL is Pretty Little Liars, a TV series that I'm shamefully addicted to Grin

Are there any names you and your husband agree on?

Peopleplease · 08/09/2016 10:54

katemess I heard there was an Aria in that. Never seen it though.

At the moment there's nothing we both love. He's veering towards more classic names and I'm wandering towards trees and birds!!

We both thought baby was going to be a boy (due to very different pregnancy) and were pretty sorted for boys names!

MrsCaecilius · 08/09/2016 12:43

Too similar in my opinion I'm afraid.

What about other flowers / trees / birds? (Or including something 'nature' as a middle name?)

Mouthfulofquiz · 08/09/2016 12:55

Too similar to Aria, and too ostrich like to be a baby name!!

What about Julia?

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 08/09/2016 13:38

Yes, I think it is OP.
What about Marcia ?

KoalaDownUnder · 09/09/2016 07:23

Much, much too similar IMO. Whether pronounced Raya or Rhea.

NigellasGuest · 09/09/2016 07:27

I don't think it matters if the two names are similar - they will live
most of their lives apart. I speak as a mother of older kids so have a different perspective.

Simmi1 · 09/09/2016 07:31

Yes too similar. Eva would be ok though I think. How about Sophia?

merrymouse · 09/09/2016 07:35

I think it's too similar, not just for them but for you - a lot of potential for people to get confused when you are talking about them. I like suggestion of Aria and Thea - similar but not too similar.

RawPrawn · 09/09/2016 07:36

Well Aria is also a noun, so why not stick with the musical theme?

Harmony? Thalia? Cadence? Melody? Carol

0pti0na1 · 09/09/2016 10:23

Too similar IMO.
