Hi,

I'm having a baby boy in a couple of weeks and we are completely stuck regarding names. We are Welsh so are open to both English and Welsh names.

We already have a Sadie which we loved because it's not overly popular here but it's not too out there! It also really suits her.

Some of our ideas include-
Gruff
Oakley
Austin
Asher

But we aren't excited about any of them! And he'll be here in a couple of weeks! Thanks

Honest opinions?

Gruff is not a name. It's an adjective. Are you giving birth to the 8th dwarf?
Oakley is a surname. Also a brand of sunglasses.
Austin is a surname.
Asher is okay. The best of a bad bunch in my opinion.

plimsolls · 05/09/2016 15:55

Gruff is a name, isn't it? I know a couple of Gruffs (of all ages).

That's my favourite from your list, OP.

2014newme · 05/09/2016 15:55

Agree. What other named do you have?

Hadenoughoftumble · 05/09/2016 15:58

Sorry didn't write that Gruff is Welsh and it's pronounced as Griff - it's quite popular around here.
Thanks for honest opinions on other names - I really am getting into a panic now! Naming a girl was so much easier!

Some others on our list were-
Jarvis (vetoed due to being in the Marvel films)
Hunter (too American for me)
Jude (vetoed by dp)
Iestyn (vetoed by dp)
Theo (not excited by it)

I love gruff (and it's a pretty well known name!).

Austin and Asher are also good. Theo is getting very popular which you may not want?

MrsHulk · 05/09/2016 16:06

And Austin is in the top 100 boys' names for 2015, it's not just a surname. It's been a first name for decades.

plimsolls · 05/09/2016 18:18

I do have a wry smile on many of these threads where posters confidently proclaim "that is not a name!" when in actual fact, it is a name.

To be fair, I searched it on behindthename and nothing came up (because it's a shortened version of Gruffydd). So I think we're all winners here.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 05/09/2016 21:25

Not liking Gruff, reminds me of the story Billy Goats Gruff.
I do like Lestyn, Austin, and my favourite Oakley, which I love.

bakingcupcakes · 05/09/2016 21:29

If I hadn't been relocating I would have called my son Ieuan. I like Asher best off your list.

Mojito6 · 05/09/2016 21:30

I very much like the name Austin, not keen on Oakley

happymumof4crazykids · 05/09/2016 21:42

Ieuan, Owen, Dylan, Rhys, Gethin, Iestyn, hewyll are all lovely Welsh boys names.

thebakerwithboobs · 05/09/2016 21:43

Asher-gorgeous, biblical name. I wish we didn't have an er surname or I would have used it! Our four Welsh nephews are Garin, Tristan, Iestyn and Iwan and I love all of those!

Buntysoven · 06/09/2016 01:15

I really like Asher. My favourite Welsh boy's name is Emrys

Hulafox · 06/09/2016 04:48

I personally love Oakley - I would use this myself (also expecting a boy soon!) except my other half isn't keen.

Evan and Owen are on our list.

minatiae · 06/09/2016 05:02

I like Asher

if you go with Gruff I'd probably put Gruffydd on the birth certificate and if outside Wales may use Griffith to avoid having to explain pronunciation over and over.

KoalaDownUnder · 06/09/2016 05:06

I like

Iago
Ifan
Emrys
Wynn

skyyequake · 07/09/2016 14:55

If you sort of like Theo how about Leo?
I like Asher off your list, hadn't heard it before but has a nice sound to it

user1466690252 · 07/09/2016 14:58

Asher is getting very popular around me. Would avoid. I LOVE griff. Fantastic name

MitzyLeFrouf · 07/09/2016 16:41

So I think we're all winners here.

Nah. You were wrong.

MrsHulk · 07/09/2016 20:11

Hah yes I thought that - you're not a "winner" if you confidently declare that three well known names aren't names at all!

lifeonthemuvaside · 07/09/2016 20:37

I love love love Austin, this would have been my sons name if I'd one, but I had all girls Smile

Hepzibar · 07/09/2016 21:16

Out of your lists. Theo.

The rest are ridiculously awful.

USBstuck · 07/09/2016 21:56

If it's not listed on the website that lists basically every name in existence, I'd argue that it's not exactly a "well-known" name.
