Madeleine - how is it pronounced?

We love the name Madeleine Ivy, for our daughter (who's due in 3 weeks). However, we cannot agree on how it's pronounced. I like it said as 'Mad-eh-lyn' (honestly, if it's not pronounced like this, I won't like it as much Blush) he says it 'Mad-ah-len'

Help!?

With my accent, I'd say it as Mad-ah-lane.

Cavogirl · 25/08/2016 23:22

Sorry - I'd say Mad - eh- lyn
From Midlands tho - so may be different where you are.
That said, it's a beautiful name however you say it xx

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 25/08/2016 23:27

I say it like you unless told otherwise but it's one of those names that can be pronounced more than one way

As well as Mad-eh-lyn, I've heard Mad-a-line and Mad-eh-lane

Ditsy4 · 25/08/2016 23:28

Madeleine mad e line like the film

ReggaeShark · 25/08/2016 23:29

RitaConnors · 25/08/2016 23:31

I say Mad-ee-line.

scrambledegz · 25/08/2016 23:33

My dd is mad a Lynn

MagnifiMad · 25/08/2016 23:37

Mad eh Len for me. (It's my name)
I know someone with name spelled the same way (I.e. The French way with 3 e) who pronounces it mad e line like the girl in the book/movie

At primary school I was known as Madeleen and in France Madel en.

Up to you as to how you want it pronounced really!

Mausageandsash · 25/08/2016 23:51

Mad-uh-Lynn.

BackforGood · 25/08/2016 23:59

NotTodaySatan · 26/08/2016 00:04

Mah-dih-lehn.

But I'm Irish so what do I know Grin

GinIsIn · 26/08/2016 00:04

Mad-eh-len, but I grew up in a French speaking country. I've heard more people in the UK promounce it Mad-ah-lin.

rumblingDMexploitingbstds · 26/08/2016 00:08

I like Mad ah Lynn best over Mad ah line or Mad ah Leyn - although it's a gorgeous name all ways. The variants are all established traditional ones too, so will be easy for anyone to hear which you use.

I have a name that can be pronounced several different but well known ways and never had any trouble child or adult with people pronouncing it other than my parents chose. Sometimes an occasional mistake when someone reads it aloud from a list ie Drs surgery, but immediately sorted, never an issue.

katemess12 · 26/08/2016 01:15

Mad-ah-len and Mad-ah-lyn sound the same to me.

But that is how I pronounce it. This was the name we gave our daughter initially, but quickly changed it because everyone immediately started calling her Maddy (I thought we could avoid that for a while at least).

katemess12 · 26/08/2016 01:16

Also, just noticed the middle name is Ivy. That's the name we changed her name to. Grin We love it. Can't shorten Ivy!

Sophronia · 26/08/2016 03:51

Mad-uh-lyn

NiceCuppaTeaAndASitDown · 26/08/2016 04:00

Madder-line

Smurfit · 26/08/2016 04:01

I would pronounce it Mad-ah-lynn unless corrected (or I'd heard it prior to having to say it) and then would do my best to pronounce it correctly.

It's like Helena, with so many variations, it's up to you how to pronounce it while accepting some people will get it wrong.

FastWindow · 26/08/2016 04:02

Maddelin.

But in my heart I'm saying Maddelain.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/08/2016 09:36

Mad-a-lyn - middle syllable very short and somewhere between a and e.

At least that's how a girl with that name at my school pronounced it.

Though I have also heard it with the last syllable slightly lengthened and pronounced more in the French way.

Lilacpink40 · 26/08/2016 09:38

Madeleine
Ma-del-in

Lilacpink40 · 26/08/2016 09:39

It will be shortened to Maddie or Mads as people always do that!

PuppyMonkey · 26/08/2016 09:55

My DD is Madda-lyn. But mostly Maddie tbh.

Very rarely she has been called Mada - line

Then one time, a woman in the swimming pool was calling her DD Mada-leen. I got chatting and asked how she spelt that - sure enough it was the classic Madeleine way. GrinConfused
