ohdearme1958, oh dear me, I got that wrong then !
Where I live, this is how my Son's friend pronounces his name, perhaps it's the region we live in. I stand to be corrected, was just trying to help. I can't stop laughing, if anybody knows how to say it, it's definitely you he he !
Thanks anyway 😄

I like Zayn. Also Adam, Esa and there's a little boy at DS' nursery called Taz, I'm not sure what it's short for but its very cute on him.

I used to live in Saudi and the Emirates (for 18 years) and have heard the Car-lid pronunciation lots of times (although it's usually closer to Khaa-lid IMO). I've also heard Kha-leed on occasion.

My (Arab) dad assures me that Arabs don't really care if you spell or pronounce their name right and that Westerners are far too uptight about these things, although from this thread I think that might just be him being lazy Grin

I have a friend called Khalid who pronounces his own name as Car-lid.

I teach a lot of kids with Asian origin names. I'm a big fan of Haaris, Qasim, Asad, Adam, Ajay and Haroon. Probably because teachers associate behaviour with a name!

I really don't like it. It doesn't sound pleasant.

I think people are getting confused by what they think they're hearing. It might sound to them as if they're hearing it - but they're not. Anyway I'm going to bring this up with my lot when they're here for lunch tomorrow. I'm going to go round the table and make them have a Carlid Carleed tongue twister competition along the lines of Peter Piper.

I'm really looking forward to it.

That will be one of my grandsons. 😂

It's short for Tasmanian Devil.
