I would have loved to use Zeinab if I'd had a girl. Zenobia is also a cool one!

Also, how about Khalifa? Can be male or female. And there's Khadija, for a girl.

My only issue with Zebediyah is that people will mishear and think it's Jebediah, as they could be pronounced similarly.

Iamcheeseman · 25/08/2016 23:10

Apart from the first in that list I've heard of all of those, can pronounce them and would know how to spell them Grin
Can someone explain how to pronounce the original name please so I know for the future?

user1471501988 · 26/08/2016 08:24

Hello Cheese, the correct pronunciation for Khalid, is (Car-lid).

AnnaMarlowe · 26/08/2016 14:45

Coffee I like all of those. Zidan is my favourite though. It always sounds just kind of cool.

ohdearme1958 · 26/08/2016 14:53

I like it. But then my children are Arab and all have Arab names.

Its pronounced KHA-lid. The KHA is a soft sound.

And the Qasim mentioned upthread is not pronounced with 'seem' at the end. Its 'sim'

Nope. I can assure you that after 40 years of living in the Middle East with an Arab husband and children I can assure you Ive never heard anyone called Khalid being called Carlid.

vitaminC what an awful post Sad

SanityClause · 26/08/2016 15:29

Of your list, I like Zidan the most, but they're all nice.

I have only heard Khalid as a surname, but I like it, and would know how to say it.

TotallySpies17 · 26/08/2016 15:30

stillwrstern enough to fly under the radar
FFS Shock I'm speechless

TotallySpies17 · 26/08/2016 15:30

still western

pinkmagic1 · 26/08/2016 15:33

Also have Arab connections and have never heard it said Car-lid. I like it, but prefer Khalifa. Love names with a 'Z' sound so some lovely names, for me anyway, on your list.

ohidoliketobe · 26/08/2016 15:41

Fuck me, vitaminc. Nowt like a bit of diversity and embracing cultural heritage to overcome the xenophobia is there. .

ohdearme1958 · 26/08/2016 15:55

Fucking hell vitaminc are you serious ???

I think she/he just wanted a wee bit of attention.

MrsGsnow18 · 26/08/2016 16:02

I like Khalid and would have no problems pronouncing. I have no idea why anyone would pronounce it carlid?! Maybe that was a typo from someone?

There will of course be variations of how people pronounce though like a lot of names!
Some might pronounce 'eed' instead of 'id' as previously mentioned.

Purplebluebird · 26/08/2016 16:27

It's fine, if you want an arabic sounding name. I'm not hugely keen, but it doesn't bother me either. It's a name I quite simply don't have an opinion about, haha!

vitaminC · 26/08/2016 16:51

Ummm, I'm deadly serious Confused and I'd like MNHQ to reinstate my post, as nothing I wrote was in any way offensive or vulgar!

I'm actually "of a different culture and religion" myself. My children all have normal, western-sounding names. They also each (as do I) have a religious name which will only every be used in religious ceremonies, and which we would never have considered using on their birth certificates, so as not to hamper their future career opportunities or have them instantly labelled and sidelined.

I'm not sure why this is such an unbelievable concept to some people!

0pti0na1 · 26/08/2016 18:52

Yes I thought "Khalid Aziz" too Smile

DoinItFine · 26/08/2016 19:00

What does a soft Kh sound like?

Like the ch in loch?

I would pronounce it Ka-LEED from just reading it.

Which I like.

But it seems is not right.

zen1 · 26/08/2016 19:12

Lots of my friends (male and female) have Muslim names starting with 'Kh' and they do get a bit annoyed with people mispronouncing the beginning. They kind of pronounce it from the back of the throat with a very soft K so you almost hear the 'h' more than the K. I like the name Khalid and also Aamirah, Zebadiyah and Zidan.
