We want a name that means peace as DH's dad who recently died Dedicated his life to conflict resolution.

Wilfred means "peaceful ruler". There meaning is perfect.

We would probably use the nickname Freddie but would consider Wilf or Wilfie.

What do people think?

I love it

UncleHerbie · 19/08/2016 19:51

Love it

MoonHare · 19/08/2016 20:00

Not keen on the name but your reasons for choosing it are sound.

PotatoBread · 19/08/2016 20:02

I like it. Prefer Wilf or Wilfie as a nn rather than Freddie

EssentialHummus · 19/08/2016 20:02

Same! It makes me think of Wilfred Owen. Obviously he was very talented but my associations to the name aren't positive.

buckingfrolicks · 19/08/2016 20:03

i know a small Wilf and he's adorable the the name is great

tralaaa · 19/08/2016 20:04

Lovely name just lovely little Wilfred

altik · 19/08/2016 20:04

I teach a Wilfred and my daughter goes to school with a Wilf. I like it - a great name!

Zhabr · 19/08/2016 20:04

I love it and also know a 6yo Wilf.

altik · 19/08/2016 20:04

Taught even!

Mouthfulofquiz · 19/08/2016 20:06

Gorgeous name, love the way it sounds.

MrsHathaway · 19/08/2016 20:23

DC3's best friend is Wilfred known as Wilf actually DC3 calls him Wolf.

I think it's lovely and will be unremarkable among other Edwardian names like Ted, Alfie, Frankie, Ruby, Eva, etc.

My first association is with Wilf, Donna Noble's grandad Tardis

MrsGsnow18 · 19/08/2016 20:28

I like Wilfred and love your reason for choosing.
When considering wilf as a NN it might be useful to know that a lot of schools nowadays use WILF ( What I'm looking for) alongside WALT ( we are learning to) for shared learning intentions/success criteria.

WhatTheDickensian · 19/08/2016 21:03

Thank you for all the positivity. I thought it would be more of a controversial name.

I need to find out more about Wilfred Owen as several people have mentioned him. I know he was an anti war poet but I don't know why there are negative connotations as alluded to my hummus.

Wilfred is on our two name shortlist for our son due in a few months. I love the versatility (nns will, Wilf, Fred, Freddie) and the meaning is lovely.

EssentialHummus · 19/08/2016 22:42

For me it's not so much negative connotations of him as a person, WhatThe, more than Wilfred Owen was a very talented, evocative poet (killed very near the end of WW1), and some of his (quite rightly) dark poems like "Anthem for Doomed Youth" and "Dulce Et Decorum Est" are not what I want to associate with a young child.

I love your reasoning behind it. It is quite a popular name amongst my dc's peers. I know a Wilfred/Freddie who is about 3 months old who is a proper cutie.

Blahia · 20/08/2016 09:35

GREAT name! I love it. Lively meaning behind it too. Go for it. I love Fred / Freddie as a nickname, but I think nicknames tend to come to you naturally, so you don't necessarily have to 'decide' which nickname(s) you are going to use -it just happens!

Blahia · 20/08/2016 09:36

*lovely, not lively!

olympicsrock · 20/08/2016 09:38

I know someone who actually called her ds s Wilf and Walt!

sonlypuppyfat · 20/08/2016 19:46

Sorry it's beyond awful, I don't understand the whole old man names at all. And the cutsie nicknames that go with them Wilfie, what 19 yr old would want to be called Wilfie

user1459464195 · 20/08/2016 20:43

I think it's a lovely name and your reasons for choosing it are really touching.

MummaGiles · 20/08/2016 20:46

Your reasons are lovely. Makes me think of Wilfred the 'dog' from the tv show of the same name, though.

BadToTheBone · 20/08/2016 20:51

I know a cute little 3 yo Wilf. It's not my style but it don't hate it a d I wouldn't be shocked to hear it.
