Have I made up this name?

Hello, I am a bit nervous about posting this but here goes..

I have fallen in love with a girls name - I thought I heard someone call their child it the other day and I though it was really lovely and I also though I had heard of it before but when I have tried to find it on the internet, I can't, now I am wondering if I mis-heard and/or made it up!

So the name I love is Ahlia/Arlia but pronounced Arr-li-a. I have found Aalia, Aaliya and several very similar ones but these are pronounced A-lea-uh and I don't like that pronunciation. Am I mis spelling it or have I made it up!! I have never liked made up names and I'm usually really traditional about names but I just though it sounded floaty and pretty

Would also be interested in other people's opinions on it - feel free to be as harsh as you like, baby has plenty of months left to cook :) It would be good to know if people like it, how you would spell it and how you would read it, if you know anyone with it and also if you think it sounds very Asian? I don't mean any offense by that at all but I am not and there are plenty of names I have loved but just seem to work better for certain races (I really hope that doesn't sound bad!)

Aaliyah or Aliyah. Its a common Arabic name. It means 'most honourable' or 'most high', I think.

Some people say 'Ahlia' (to rhyme with Dahlia)...others say Ah-LEE-uh.

I don't mind made-up names so I don't understand the problem.

Arlia sounds a bit tacky in my accent so I def wouldn't use it (Yorkshire) Where are you based OP?

Any other spelling is better as well because all I 'see' is Arla milk!!

This spelling makes it look as though the person who used the name has primary school spelling levels.
A bit like when people call their children Sofeeya instead of Sophia etc.

I can imagine this is a name for people who like to hyphenate. Arlia-May or Arlia-Rose. It's a big yuk from me.

Weirdly, I met an Aaliah the other day, pronounced Ah-Lee-uh. Never heard the name before but thought how pretty it was when she introduced herself (and I asked how she spelled it cos it helps me remember!).

Oh god no don't spell it how you want you will look like an illiterate fool.

I don't think most people will think you're illiterate. It's common nowadays to see strange spellings of common names so an uncommon one will just look like a name in its own right. Whatever name you pick someone out there won't like it as in to name their child. That doesn't matter, it only matters what you think.

Someone has already said this, but are you sure it wasn't Arya? I've heard of a few little Aryas recently.

I know it shouldn't matter if I want to spell it differently and if someone else had asked a similar question I'd have probably said go for it but I think I'd prefer to spell it a traditional way (probably partly because I actually do have the spelling ability of a primary school child, no need to draw attention to it lol)

Maybe what I heard was Arya, I actually like that too although the fact it comes from a popular show puts me off a bit, there were a few other similar names I liked too when I tried to find it so I will have a think. I do also like Aurelia and know someone with that name who is lovely. Aurora reminds me a bit too much of Sleeping Beauty!

ISuggestYouGoBackThere - your post made me smile as Rose is a name we are actually considering for a middle name! Not a fan of hyphenated names personally though. I am actually from down a lot further south than you but we do have 'northerners' in close family and I can now hear them saying 'our Leah' so thanks for the heads up with that!

What about the cultural thing? I also read it was Arabic and that itself doesn't worry me but do you think it sounds foreign? There are lots of names that I absolutely love and think can sound beautiful on some people but turn a bit tacky sounding if you aren't from that culture. Not even just a colour thing but like when English people pick American names, that type of thing. Trouble is, these are the names I seem drawn to this time - weird when my two other children have very English names! Don't want to sound like I am trying to be too 'out there'
