Have I made up this name?

Hello, I am a bit nervous about posting this but here goes..

I have fallen in love with a girls name - I thought I heard someone call their child it the other day and I though it was really lovely and I also though I had heard of it before but when I have tried to find it on the internet, I can't, now I am wondering if I mis-heard and/or made it up!

So the name I love is Ahlia/Arlia but pronounced Arr-li-a. I have found Aalia, Aaliya and several very similar ones but these are pronounced A-lea-uh and I don't like that pronunciation. Am I mis spelling it or have I made it up!! I have never liked made up names and I'm usually really traditional about names but I just though it sounded floaty and pretty

Would also be interested in other people's opinions on it - feel free to be as harsh as you like, baby has plenty of months left to cook :) It would be good to know if people like it, how you would spell it and how you would read it, if you know anyone with it and also if you think it sounds very Asian? I don't mean any offense by that at all but I am not and there are plenty of names I have loved but just seem to work better for certain races (I really hope that doesn't sound bad!)

Thank you!

I know someone with an Arlia (pretty) and someone with an Arla (not so pretty and is the name of a chain of dairies!)

pieceofpurplesky that dragon Ball character is Vegeta, Arlia is the name of a planet. Not the point

I actually like that pronunciation too Sophronia, thank you! Probably all by the by anyway as I doubt I will convince hubby of any of the versions but I do have a while to convince him. It will be so much easier to pick a name if it's a boy!

I'd pronounce Aalia "arr-lee-uh". I'd pronounce Aaliyah "Arr-LIE-uh".

I think Aalia is a really sweet name. You didn't make it up, your daughter chose it...

Gin DS just has a bobble head with Arlia Vegeta on it - can't say I have paid that much attention Blush

GinAndSonic · 20/07/2016 12:00

pieceofpurplesky yeah it's Vegeta as he appears on planet Arlia. My boyfriend is a supernerd and is passing on his knowledge to my son

'Alya' is a Russian name that would be pronounced similarly, and without much scope for mispronunciation.

'Alia' is a simpler spelling of the Arabic name, and also a character in the 'Dune' science fiction books.

I know a child called Alia (with the emphasis on the first syllable) and another called Aaliyah (with the emphasis on the second syllable). I've got a feeling that the "r" sound you help was because of the accent of the person speaking.

dailymaillazyjournos · 22/07/2016 14:27

All the Aaliyah's I've met are Arabic or Muslim. But don't see why that should be a deciding factor if you like the name or variation of the name. Would you consider just Leah without the Al, which is used by lots of religions/nationalities.

Luciferbox · 24/07/2016 07:30

I know a few Alia's who also say it the same way.

Swearwolf · 24/07/2016 07:55

I used to know an Alia who was short for Natalia, could that be an option if you're worried about it being culturally appropriate?
