Strange spellings

So i have just been reading the news and i saw the name Esteysi... apparently it is pronounced Stacy, but this had to be described in the news story becuase it was shown as Esteysi 'Stacy' Surname.

I was just wondering who would give their child a nice, normal name but lumber them with a spelling that will have to be explained for the rest of their life.

And what are the worst most unusual spellings of normal names you have come accross?

That's just ridiculous. Yooneek spellings are fine IMO. On the condition however that you can see what the name is, Staicee for example would be fine, even Steysi would be, but what's with the silent E.

I have an acquaintance who's DS is called "Jaxon".....why the need for the "x"?!!

There are lots of names that have to be spelt out:

Alastair/Alistair/Alasdair etc
Katherine/Cathryn/Kathryn/Catherine etc
Finley/Finlay
Sofia/Sophia

I would have guessed that the full name was Esteysi and Stacy was the diminutive form? Just a guess though.

But it doesn't make the sounds that make up the word Stacey. You can't have a silent E at the start of a name!

But actually I think you're confusing the pronounciation with the nick name of the person.

I think you're misunderstanding the reporting - it's not Esteysi pronounced Stacey, it's the fact that her official name is Esteysi Something Double Barrelled (possibly Mexican-American?), but that she goes by the more Anglo/short 'Stacey Sanchez' on a day to day basis.

When I see multiple Xs in names, I just assume that the parents are really enthusiastic about their DC making it in the adult movie industry without having to compromise their identity.

Oh god. I wish I could say te one I know, but it would put me in a second. It's not particularly strange, more annoying and unnecessary.

I think Gummi was making the point that some names have multiple acceptable spellings so people with those names have to spell them and they aren't made up, so if you didn't want to "lumber your child with a name that needed constant spelling" as per the OP, you'd have to eliminate loads of perfectly normal names/spellings.

Phonetically, in Spanish, Esteysi would indeed be pronounced Stacey.

I've come across an Avarie recently (well on Wednesday), it took me a while to realise what the name actually is: Avery... Although according to my googling, it should be Averie as apparently Avarie isn't pronounced as Avery!

I don't get the problem people have with Jaxon. Do you think there was the same outrage when someone first decided to spell Dickson as Dixon?
